Success of low-budget independent films in 2009 such as "Breathless"
, 'Daytime Drinking
', and "Old Partner"
has brought a ray of hope that 'Independent films can reach a variety of audiences'. 'A Seminar on Korea's Independent Film-Publicness of Multiplatform Market' was a place for those in the indie film industry to think about how to transform such hope into a reality. The seminar took place as part of official programs at PIFF (Pusan International Film Festival) on Oct. 13 at Culture Hall, Centum City of Shinsegye.
Irreverent to the theme in some way, what was really discussed was how copyright of an independent film should be protected and how to pay it what it deserves and to distribute it.
, director of SIFF(Seoul Independent Film Festival) said in the seminar emceed by Kim Myong-jun, director of Media Center, " 'A Report on The Current Status on Independent Film in the Multi-platform in 2009' shows that channels for accessing independent films are becoming rapidly diversified to include Internet, cell-phone, DMB, IP TV. This is called 'An Era of Multi-platform'. What matters is a lack of contents". "Independent film is befitting in that era given that it is a form of completed content costing low production money. The number of independent films produced a year is quite large. "Old Partner"
was a watershed to attract an increasing number of people to see independent films", Kim added while reexamining the possibility of independent film.
"Considering the number of films (feature and short films altogether) submitted to SIFF 2009 was 722, the number of independent films made in Korea a year is more than 1000", Kim said, referring to the same report, "in terms of 'A Light Sleep
' and "Sleeping Beauty"
, and 'Da Capo
', all of which were released by Kino Eye in the form of theatrical release and fee-based online screening at the same time, net profit of the former type was higher than that from the latter. Net profit from theatrical release of "Breathless"
by Studio Nurimbo stood at 4.2 million won, which is similar to that of online screening of 400 million won. This shows that multi-platform has a new possibility".
Kim continued to say that, "independent films tend to represent a variety of tastes unlike the mainstream and understand what the mainstream doesn't. Therefore, it is difficult for contents of independent films to be distributed widely. Moreover, the independent industry is not responding proactively enough in the era of multi platform". "In the short term, marketing strategy is needed for independent films in the multi-platform environment such as online and IPTV. In the long term, we need to think about ways to build infrastructure and environment where quality contents for public good can be produced continuously", he added.
At the seminar, an intensive discussion was held with participation of Kim jun-bum, director of Cine 21i, Kim Hyun-jung, manager of Industry Support Team at Korean Film Council, film director Yoon Seong-ho
along with presentations titled 'Role of Indie Plug as Digital Syndicator for Indie Film' (Kim Ji-hee, head of Technology Development Team at Indie Plug) and 'Policy Support for Media Convergence & Online Distribution of Indie Films' (Hur Gyung from Media Activist Network of Korea).
