'Running Boy' Inspires Hong Kong Marathon Buddies

"We ran the Chuncheon Marathon after watching the Korean film 'Running Boy'," said accountant Lo Kwokchi, 34, from Hong Kong.

Lo and five of her friends flew over 2,000 km from Hong Kong just to participate in the Marathon, which formed the background to the movie that she saw on DVD earlier this year. She enjoys Korean films and has seen more than 10, including "My Sassy Girl", "My Brother" and "Daisy" -- but was most taken with "Running Boy" ("Marathon"), the story of an autistic boy named Cho-won who overcomes his handicap by running the Chuncheon Marathon.

"The autumn leaves in the Lake Eui-am depicted in the movie were absolutely beautiful", said Lo, noting there is no autumn, with its striking colors, in Hong Kong.

As soon as she watched "Running Boy", she started planning to visit Chuncheon in fall with her jogging companions in Hong Kong. Luckily, her friends had also seen "Running Boy" ("Marathon"), and were more than willing to accompany Lo. Among them were Fung Szeming, 33, an engineer who watched the movie three times; and Lee Shingkin, 37, who works in insurance and says she was most impressed with the movie's final scene, when Cho-won's mom bursts into tears watching her son finish the race. Lo Siukeung, 40, Lo Pakling, 43, and Lai Hungwai, 42, also joined the group.

After arriving on Friday afternoon, Lo and her friends visited Chuncheon Stadium and the school that featured in the movie. As last-minute preparation, the six watched "Running Boy" again on Saturday evening, a day before the race. On the day of the race, Lo broke her record time, crossing the finish line in 4 hours and 15 minutes. Fung and Lo Siukeung also set personal bests, with 3:35:00 and 3:33:00, respectively.

"This is an absolutely beautiful Marathon course, made even more inspiring because I was actually experiencing the beautiful scenery I saw in the movie", said Lo just after finishing.
