'Shine' takes plot from documentary

Korean theater has been introducing a number of new musical genres -- from moviecals to musical thrillers -- this year to satisfy audiences who crave something different.

Musical producer Kim Dal-joong presents, for his serious fans, a new musical genre with "Shine", a musical based on a TV documentary series. The musical "Shine" is now playing at Sadari Art Center in Daehangno.

"Shine" is the latest musical for Kim, who has been gaining popularity among musical followers with his recent productions "Innocent Steps", "Thrill Me" and "Finding Kim Jong-wook".

Taking the story of KBS's documentary series "Ingan Geukjang" subtitled "Sungtan's 12th Christmas", the musical follows a family consisting of a father who is a poor street entertainer; a mother suffering from a mental disease; and a 12-year-old boy who loves his parents as they are.

The documentary-turned-musical pushes emotional buttons just as effectively as it did five years ago on TV.

It starts by telling the story of Sung-tan and a Christmas day celebration, and also the 12th birthday of the boy. Sung-tan means Christmas in Korean.

Through the eyes of Sung-tan, the musical stresses the importance of the family, and draws attention to social indifference toward the suffering of others.

The show is a good option for those in search of a family-friendly musical, although it requires dedicated patience to follow the quick Park In-kyu, a 22-year-old actor playing a 12-year-old boy in the musical.

The musical runs through Dec. 30. Tickets are 30,000 won and 35,000 won. For more information go to http://www.e-eda.com or call (02) 762-0010.
