'The Slingshot' Praised for Dealing with Current Affairs

The KBS2 drama "The Slingshot" has drawn much attention by touching on serious social issues once again -- this time new town construction and public work projects.

Chae Do-woo (Kim Kang-woo) faced opposition in pursuing his plan to build a luxury town. The ideal mayor of the city concerned, who truly wants to serve people rather than pursue power, told Chae, "Article 10 of the constitution stipulates that all people are entitled to human dignity and the right to pursue happiness, and Article 7 states that government workers are obliged to serve the entire public and be responsible for their well being. Could you please help me to live up to those rules?" He added that he would give full support to Chae's plan only if he included building an apartment complex, an elementary and middle school, and a public health center in his plan.

But displeased, Chae talked about his own notion of an ideal society. He stressed that a city should be designed only for the upper 10 percent of the population. "The population of this country is 50 million, right? If only 5 million of them were selected, it would take less than 20 years to make the country the wealthiest power in the world", he said.

Kim Shin (Park Yong-ha), who had lost his family due to Chae's distorted ambitions, became irritated and asked, "Then what are you going to do with the rest of the 45 million people? Are you going to bulldoze them into the sea?" Chae argued casuistically, "That's why you are hopeless. You became angry with me because you think you cannot be included in those selected 5 million people. We all wouldn't care for the rest if we could belong to the 5-million group".

But nothing could stop Chae from pushing ruthlessly ahead with his plan. He mobilized a gang, got people who demonstrated against it arrested, and demolished houses and shops there. He even launched a planning team responsible for the project.

Chae also tried to establish connections in the political circle. Saying, "We need someone in power. That must be why my father wanted that desperately to enter the political world", he made a backdoor deal to make one of his aides a vice mayor of the city as a puppet for him. The scene where Chae suggested paying W1 billion in return reflects a current real-life situation where the bribery scandal of a former president is engulfing the nation. All this once again proves that writer Song Ji-na has sharp insight into the country's modern history. Song has already established a reputation for adeptly depicting turbulent periods of the country's history through the mega-hit dramas "Eyes of Dawn" and "Sandglass".

Meanwhile, on the May 11 episode, Chae forcibly put his father into a mental hospital to get rid of obstacles to pursuing his plans.
