'Thirst' Poised to Top Box-office Charts

Park Chan-wook's movie "Thirst", which competed at this year's Cannes International Film Festival, is poised to top the box-office. Its reservation rates on major ticket booking sites topped the charts ahead of the movie's opening on April 30.

The story about a Catholic priest-turned-vampire who falls in love with someone he's not allowed to love, "Thirst" has received rave reviews for its creativity and beautiful images as well as the impressive acting of its leading cast: Song Kang-ho and Kim Ok-bin.

"Thirst" topped the box-office last weekend with its high reservation rates, which recorded 43.4 percent on the ticketing computer network of the Korean Film Council, 40.7 percent on Interpark and 29.1 percent on Maxmovie. Thanks to extensive media exposure, the movie will likely easily draw viewers once it opens.

Meanwhile, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" has failed to beat "Thirst" despite Hugh Jackman's visit to Korea to promote the movie. Its reservations rates remain quite low for an action blockbuster from a major Hollywood studio at slightly over 10 percent. Its chances of topping the box-office during the first week since its opening appear bleak.

The comedy "Secret Couple", which gave viewers quite a few laughs, is also losing ground due to the release of many new, quite competitive productions. However, its reservation rates rank third now, beating those of "Insadong Scandal".

Several family-oriented productions will open on April 30 in time for the May holidays.

"White Tuft, The Little Beaver", which was imported by comedian Lee Kyung-kyu, is an animation film voiced by many celebrities including Yoo Jae-seok, Kim Goo-ra and Kim Dong-hyun. "Sergeant Keroro The Super Duper Movie: Dragon Wars" is an anime film featuring popular characters. The Japanese animation production "Chocolate Underground", which is a story about boys from a country where chocolate is prohibited, also opens May 1.
