Maintaining a 30% viewership rating throughout its 9 month broadcast, KBS daily family drama High As The Sky, Wide As The Earth (a.k.a. By Land and Sky) has been a big hit with viewers. The drama takes a look at the modern family, tackling issues like the difficulties faced by stepparents and stepchildren; conflicts between biological and adoptive parents; the aftermath of a remarriage; and the high divorce rate among the younger generation, and resulting involuntary childcare from their grandparents.

Rising stars Han Hyo Ju (Spring Waltz) and Park Hae Jin (Famous Chil Princess) portray a young couple hailing from very different family situations. Han Hyo Ju plays the smart and kind-hearted Ji Soo, who greatly values her family and goes out of her way to help others, while Park Hae Jin plays the outwardly rebellious Mu Young, who constantly struggles in his relationship with his family. The ensemble cast includes Jung Ae Ri (Lovers In Paris), Lee Joo Hyun (Sweet Spy), Kang Jung Hwa (What Planet Are You From?), and Hong Soo Ah, who previously appeared in Nonstop 5 with Han Hyo Ju.

Moo Young (Park Hae Jin) was raised in a loving family consisting of his father, his stepmother Myung Ja (Jung Ae Ri), and his stepbrother. Despite a lack of money, Myung Ja has managed to keep the family together; moreover, she never once treated Moo Young any differently than her biological son. But that did not deter Moo Young from keeping a distance from his family, for fear of getting hurt one day. His heart mellows when he meets the cheerful and bright Ji Soo (Han Hyo Joo), who brings out the best in him. But a twist of fate puts Ji Soo in a hot seat with Moo Young - Ji Soo works for Myung Ja's stepsister Myung Joo, and learns that her single father and Myung Ja are in love. Though Ji Soo fully supports her father's newfound romance, she's conflicted because if her father does marry Myung Joo, her own lover Moo Young would become her step cousin.

This drama searches the true meaning of a “happy family” by comparing two families: one of a low social and financial status whose members sincerely trust and care about one another despite their constant bickering, and an affluent one whose members have lost trust in one another yet try to save their family from disgrace and after many twists and turns make it reborn into a genuine family. This drama also attempts to tackle social issues facing today’s families, such as a high divorce rate among young couples and the older generation’s involvement in raising grandchildren at the age when they should be enjoying their twilight years in peace and comfort. The primary goal of the drama is to find a broader meaning of family.
