YesAsia Editorial Description

The debut feature of director Hur Jin Ho (One Fine Spring Day), Christmas in August stars two of the most popular actors in Korea, Han Suk Kyu (Shiri) and Shim Eun Ha (Art Museum by the Zoo, Tell Me Something). It was screened during the International Critics Week at the Cannes Film Festival in 1998.

Shot in a secluded area outside of Seoul, Christmas in August centers around a small photography shop owned by Jung Won (Kim Suk Kyu), who has an incurable disease that leaves him only a short time to live. Meanwhile, he meets Darim (Shim Eun Ha), a meter reader who drops by his studio to develop pictures of parking violators. As she becomes a part of his daily routine, he finds himself becoming more and more attached to her. But he can't express his affections to her because he knows he doesn't have much time left.

alright Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
Knowing he didn't have long to live, he tried to be as cheerful as he could and faced death bravely. The male lead did well but the film is slow and very quiet plus a bit dull.

Light love story Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
Han Suk Kyu is really different in this film. He is soft and caring. In this film, he own a photo store were he met a girl and became a friend. The girl started to be infatuated to him without knowing that he is sick and will soon die. What's really sad is that they didn't even get to say good-bye to each other before he die. Sacrificial love, it will truly touch your heart.

Christmas in August Customer Review Rated Bad 1 - 1 out of 10
My friend and I both fell asleep.... boring.. and VERY slow. Story ... well whatever story it was, was like watching a snail come toward you. not entertaining at all. the closest these two got to eachother was what you see on the cover. disliked this movie.

A gift for us all Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
This is a moving and beautifully quiet film of a young man dying and finding someone to ease his pain at the end. The scene where Han Suk Kyu looks out the cafe window with his hand out of focus trying to touch Shim Eun Ha outside on the street is hauntingly poignant. A beautiful film with great performances and production.

What is LOVE? Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Some mentioned that this film is so slow and nothing really happens. Yes, it's all true cause real life can feel slow and real love doesn't necessarily have a climax. This film does not "tell" you some fictional character's passionate once-a-lifetime-kind-of love story, it "lets you in" the life of this REAL people who could be living somewhere around you. If you've ever been in love, you must know. Was(or Is) your love so dramatic and full of climax? I believe most of us answered no. And if you happen to be one of the few who answered yes, think again cause it might have been so only in your mind and perception. In the minds of the two protagonists, their love also must have felt like a storm although what's shown to us the viewers is just a breeze. The director's minimalistic approach to love only makes it look real. Sometimes less is really better.

P.S. This film depicts how love starts. In the same director's second film 'One Fine Spring Day,' you will see how love ends in real life. If you liked 'Christmas in August', I recommend you to watch it too. It's equally beautiful and heart-breaking if not more so.
