YesAsia Editorial Description

2007 saw the airing of popular medical dramas The Great White Tower and Surgeon Bong Dal Hee, piquing audience interest in the genre, but the medical profession is hardly a new theme for Korean television. 2000's Medical Center and 90s dramas Sunflower and General Hospital all revolved around the field of medicine, not to mention historical period dramas Hur Jun and Dae Jang Geum. One of the most memorable and representative medical dramas though has to be MBC's 1997 series Medical Brothers (a.k.a. Doctor Brothers) starring two of Korea's biggest stars, Jang Dong Gun (All About Eve, Taegukgi) and Dae Jang Geum heroine Lee Young Ae. Both gave breakthrough performances in this riveting drama, performing fairly daring love scenes by Korean television standards. Jang Dong Gun, in particular, departed from his usual good guy image to play a cool and complicated character.

Both brothers and rivals, Kim Su Hyung (Jang Dong Gun) and Kim Jun Ki (Son Chang Min, Woman of the House) are doctors at the same hospital. Young and promising figures in the field, Su Hyung and Jun Ki are dedicated to their profession, though not always as disciplined in other matters. Su Hyung's rash and insensitive personality often brings tears to his longtime girlfriend Min Joo (Lee Young Ae), who is also a doctor. The brothers face crises in both their personal and professional lives when Jun Ki's mistake leads to his friend's wife's passing and Su Hyung discovers a family secret concerning his identity.

Professional Review of "Medical Brothers (DVD) (End) (English Subtitled) (MBC TV Drama) (US Version)"

    February 4, 2008

Historical Dramas often lead people to grow an interest in history. Some of the great family dramas of yesteryear put some sugar in the bitter coffee that life with your parents (or in-laws) can be. Good sports dramas can give no-name players an extra bit of that determination needed to survive, to hang on and wait for one's moment. And then there are medical dramas. Good enough to make people take an interest in medicine, but also superficial enough to lead people not to touch hospitals with a ten foot pole. That was always this genre's Achilles' heel: having the keys to something important, and ruining those expectations most of the time. Hospitals are the kind of environment that demand realism, doctors and nurses are the kinds of professions you can't just do in the intervals between a syrupy ballad-drenched date and parents throwing furniture all around the house because they don't agree with our lovebirds' choice of future. Managing to mix both the syrup and the seriousness is MBC's 1997 hospital-set drama Medical Brothers, which presents the realism of the demanding medical profession alongside the exaggerated interpersonal storylines of the popular Trendy Dramas formula. It's a bit dated, but compared to other examples of its genre, you could do much worse.

While shows like Quincy were populating American television oh so many moons ago, the medical genre more or less started in Korea in the early eighties, when KBS' Hope started broadcasting. Mostly focusing on situation drama in the vein of its American counterparts, the genre carried on into the nineties with no real contender for Korea's first medical drama masterpiece. That day came in 1994, when young Choi Wan Gyu (of Jumong fame) started his career with a bang, sleeping and breathing the hospital air for months to write the superb General Hospital. Putting the spotlight on the life of residents and the grueling road to become a full-fledged doctor, the show made stars out of Lee Jae Ryong, Shin Eun Kyung and Jeon Gwang Ryeol. It combined up-to-then never seen before realism, convincing characters and drama that didn't simply have to do with who was prettier or whether their parents would sell their grandpa's dog to see them getting married.

The problem occurred post-General Hospital. The specter of Trendy Dramas hit this genre as well, with the kind of violence that would eradicate even the strongest tree. Eventually, even medical dramas fell into that magical formula, with pretty stars prancing around the hospital just waiting to go around the corner and meet their belle, who of course happened to be a ludicrously pretty doctor as well. The genre finally experienced a much needed shot in the arm (No pun intended. Maybe.) with 2007's masterful The White Tower, which is more a political than medical drama, but did indeed show hospitals are not all about teen idols treating their jobs as trait d'union between a kiss and a hug. Just where Medical Brothers stands in this totem pole of medical dramas is quite hard to say. It does have all the required ingredients to fall into the dating maxim game: secrets of birth, intra-hospital relationship, ad-hoc symmetrical character development, and exaggerated situations. Yet the weight of the profession itself is much stronger, and a little more realistic than its predecessors or the shows that followed it.

The brothers of the title are Kim Su Hyung (Jang Dong Gun of Typhoon) and Kim Jun Gi (Son Chang Min of Shin Don), who both work at the same hospital. The former is as good with the knife as he's popular with women, but on the personality side of things there's glass ceilings all around him, keeping his cold, selfish ego caged inside. The latter is the nice guy, certainly promising but a few steps behind his younger brother. Involved in their personal and professional lives is Min Ju (Lee Young Ae of Sympathy for Lady Vengeance), Su Hyung's girlfriend, who's been suffering his shenanigans for many years. You can pretty much guess where the story will go. Something happens in the middle putting the two brothers at a crossroad, their friendship and respect for each other as doctors challenged. But that something also slowly starts to crash Su Hyung's glass ceiling, he starts to open himself, becoming a better person, or maybe even a better doctor? After all, Hippocrates never said doctors should be cold and calculating machines.

Medical Brothers is a very predictable story then, with all the ingredients that made so many Korean Dramas of the nineties a bit hard to digest. But then again, there's also a layer of pathos and a pleasant familiarity which improves things considerably, especially the acting of Son Chang Min, Lee Young Ae, and even Jang Dong Gun, finally escaping from the pretty boy image of the early nineties which led him to fame. The realism here can't be compared to General Hospital and especially The White Tower, but all considered it's an acceptable level, particularly if you compare it with other medical shows from the late nineties and early 2000s. Dormant for years, the genre is now starting to reemerge, with shows like Surgeon Bong Dal Hee mixing some of the old tricks (intra-hospital relationship) with much more realism and better production values. A sequel to the great General Hospital is in the planning stages, hopefully bringing back the original cast, and many other shows are either in production or casting, showing that the next few years will probably mark the full fledged revival of medical dramas, this time done the right way. As far as Medical Brothers goes, it does show its age, but that sometimes is a good thing. Particularly if the nostalgia factor is high, you can do much worse than watch this show. It's like a bit of coffee inside a big block of sugar. You can't escape the bitterness, but then the aftertaste is rather sweet. If cavities pop up there's nothing to worry about. Don't know how many brothers sharing that profession are out there, but dentists are doctors, too!

This is a must see series. The acting was fantastic. You will laugh, cry and cheer. You will not regret buying this series. The two brothers worked very well together. You will pick one as I did and either way, you will be happy. Don't let this go by. Get It...

Excellent Actor........... Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Jang Dong Gun, the handsome actor is one of my favorites. He did an outstanding job in this series with his excellent acting. This is a sad series that gave me puffy eyes from crying. If you are the sympathetic type, watch it! You will probably end up like me rooting for Jang Dong Gun, the central and tragic figure in this story whose existence despite all his flaws, will matter to you. You will find behind the cold facade and callous behavior, the playboy doctor played by Jang Dong Gun is a wounded soul longing for fatherly love and recognition. Just fast forward the unnecessary medical parts of the series and enjoy great performance by Jang Dong Gun.

Doctor Brothers Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
I watched this drama twice. It was very touching and made me cry. Although the drama had the element of cancer-boring element in many korean drama, this one was exceptional as the ending was very meaningful.
I appreciated Lee youngae very much, she often pick the social meaningful drama/film. The main actor is also handsome too. I will watch it again with korean sound later.

Tour de force performance! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I saw this drama not too long ago and it blew me away. The story is not extraordinary and some of the medical scenes might not be very accurate, but this is more of a human drama, than a medical show. In terms of acting, it was excellent all around. But I must mention Jang Dong Gun especially, as his performance of the cocky, suave and brilliant doctor was a stand out. He really humanised his character and made me care about what happened to him. The relationship between the brothers was moving too. Watch this if you want to see a touching story, it is not flashy the way Lovers in Paris or Winter Sonata are, just a basic good story about human relationships.

well known casts Customer Review Rated Bad 4 - 4 out of 10
well known casts with a boring story - some of the medical practice scenes are not accetpable and impossible to happen in a western hospital. I don't suppose I should judge that from a viewer's point of view but after all, it is a drama based on a hospital practising western practice. Blood all over a surgeon
mask during an operation, give me a break.
