New York City is considered the center of culture and art and Korea is making efforts to have its culture known better in the city for a broader exposure to a bigger audience.
The Korean Cultural Services in New York has laid out its plans: It has designated this year "The Year of Hallyu in New York" and will hold a variety of events to let people know the diverse aspects of Korean culture.
It will first focus on promoting Korean movies in New York City. It plans to show at least one Korean movie at one of the three Manhattan venues, including the Imagine Asian Theater and the Korean Society.
And it will hold a series of cultural activities such as concerts, a Korean food festival and a craft fair in Manhattan throughout the year.
The center will also compile New York Times articles on Korea into a booklet to send to opinion leader in the U.S. likely to be willing to help the Korean-American community.
According to the cultural center, The New York Times has recently shown greater interest in Korean culture. The number of articles that dealt with Korean culture has risen to 70 last year from the 20 back in 2002.
The Korean Cultural Service in New York was established in 1979 under the authority of the Korean Consulate General in New York. It is dedicated to broadening understanding of Korea through cultural and academic activities.
The Cultural Service sponsors and hosts many different types of activities, including art exhibits, film screenings, traditional Korean music and dance events, Korean food festivals, lectures and sporting events.
It also provides information on Korea-U.S. relations and assists exchange programs between the two countries.
