YesAsia Editorial Description
With an incredibly wacky title and the ad-lib prowess of its leads, How the Lack of Love Affects Two Men is the first feature film from Kim Sung Hoon, who was an assistant director for Jang Na Ra's debut Oh! Happy Day and He Was Cool. This time, instead of banking on loaded plots or internet novels, Kim passed the ball to Bong and especially Baek, who's become a master at these kind of unique roles, and it is their spot-on partnership that drives this hilarious slapstick comedy.

Professional Review of "How the Lack of Love Affects Two Men Special Limited Edition DTS"
|
Although Korean cinema is better known for its melodramas and gangster films, the country does produce a fair number of comedies, most of which tend to be very wacky affairs. Despite its odd title, which seems to suggest some kind of thoughtful emotional drama, How the Lack of Love Affects Two Men, the first outing for director Kim Sung Hoon, is a prime case in point, being a crazed mixture of slapstick and sexual harassment which makes the most of its two lead stars' considerable talent for physical humour. The film follows the titular two men, namely widower Cheol Dong (veteran actor Baek Yoon Shik, also in Like a Virgin and The Art of Fighting), who makes his living conning money out of companies, and his gangly son Dong Hyun (Bong Tae Gyu, recently in Family Ties). Their lives are thrown into disarray when Cheol rents the flat below to Mimi, a recently divorced woman who plans to open a cafe and who has a penchant for wearing rather revealing clothes. The stage is thus set for a battle between the two men for Mimi's affections, though they also face an obstacle in the form of her ex-husband, not to mention the fact that she may quite understandably not want either of them. Despite the subject matter, and the fact that the idea of father and son competing for the sexual favours of the same woman is inherently creepy, the film is strangely innocent, and although there are breast and cleavage jokes a-plenty, there is nothing offensive or particularly sleazy on show. Whilst for the most part the humour is of the expected saucy slapstick variety, it does drift into some fairly bitter territory, with the two men turning quite nasty when they don't get their way, either with Mimi or each other. It is arguably these scenes which are the funniest, with some decidedly twisted and mean-spirited gags being thrown in, for example when Cheol takes the rather extreme measure of tying his son up in a sack to prevent him from cramping his style. Although this may sound innocent enough, he actually keeps the poor lad in there for several days, starving him and refusing to let him use the bathroom, leading to an amusing Oldboy reference. The film as a whole is filled with similar cinematic jokes, some of which work quite well, and others, such as a bizarre play on The Matrix, are likely to leave viewers scratching their heads. This all makes for a pretty wacky mix, though one which works very well, providing a good balance of different types of jokes, and the film is generally very funny. It also benefits from strong comedic performances from both Baek and Bong, and despite the fact that both play characters who are basically sex-starved perverts who will stop at nothing to try and outwit the other - the film might more accurately have been titled How the Lack of Sex Affects Two Men - the plot is surprisingly involving, if only to see which of the two end up with poor oblivious Mimi. To be fair, it's worth noting that she is not much of a catch herself, spending a good amount of the film in a drunken stupor, not to mention being far too old for Hyun, however desperate he might be. By revolving around such a wretched set of characters, the film does have a pleasingly offbeat and amoral feel, which director Kim maintains throughout, never sliding into any unnecessary sentiment or last minute melodrama as might have been expected. Although at nearly two hours the film is perhaps a little too long, Kim does manage to keep things bright and breezy through a variety of odd inserts and strange visual techniques, with a number of weird animated sequences being thrown in for good measure, many of which seem wholly unrelated to the plot. This adds an at times surreal air to the proceedings and further underlines the film's general sense of maniacal energy, ensuring that things never get dull. As a result, How the Lack of Love Affects Two Men makes for highly entertaining viewing, and is a must for fans of Korean comedy. Energetic and imaginative, it offers a fast paced barrage of laughs which although for the most part in dubious taste, relies more upon the excellent comedic performances of the cast rather than the cheap shock gags so common in the genre. by James Mudge - BeyondHollywood.com |

| "How the Lack of Love Affects Two Men" is a wonderfully hilarious dark comedy about a father and son competing for the affection of their new downstairs tenant, Mimi (Lee Hye-young). When Mimi arrives on the seen, her hip-swinging walk and low-cut dresses draw the drooling attention of every male in the neighborhood. Dad Cheol Dong (Baek Yoon Shik) and son Dong Hyun (Bong Tae Gyu) first set about fencing off their new love interest from outsiders, then seek to claim her for themselves. The rivalry between father and son escalates until they are taking truly sadistic (and funny) steps to defeat the other. What sets this film apart from the run of the mill bawdy slapstick comedy is the deadpan, Buster Keaton-ish presence of the great Baek Yoon Shik. This is a perfect marriage of quirky actor and even quirkier character! Very highly recommended. |

Wooing with a Tee!
|
Although the Rolling Stones song constantly refrains that "You can't always get what you want", father and son combo team extraordinary here, Cheol Dong and Dong Hyun, certainly go down fighting passionately in trying and get what they need, by getting a woman into their lives. Never as the lack of love by two men been so expressed, as each try to win the heart of Mimi, the possible object and provider of what lacks in their lives. And what better than to have two brilliant actors here, performing as these two eccentric love strucks. With Tae Gyu Bong playing the son role here as Dong Hyun, you're assured a guaranteed spirit lift by his brilliantly timed comic humor, and the mix of his additionally charming naivety and oddball charisma of his characters, making it a sure fire way to have a bit of laugh when Tae Gyu is around - and he certainly doesn't fail to amuse here. He looks funny, he is funny and is brilliant at what he does - and he's a nice guy too! Along with Yoon Shik Beak as his father Cheol Dong, you get one crazy and madcap double act. Although this film isn't a classic comedy, you certainly get a large dollop of daft eccentricity and visually referenced humor to look out for. Yes, even Tae Bong climbing though a window "Sadako" style (instead of a telly) is in this, as he sees his father getting the better of him in their 'battle' to woo Mimi. Another extroverted aspect of this film is Dong Hyun's array of tee shirts he keeps appearing in. In fact, you could have an on-line competition with this film, to see how many different tees you can spot Tae Gyu wearing. If Cheol Dong couldn't get the best things in life for his son, he certainly has a good collection of stylish tees (and isn't lacking in those). The only thing he doesn't get, though, is Mimi additionally wearing a tee shirt with "Come and Get It" printed on the front - but he cannot have everything. Initially, when I first heard about this film, I expected it to have quite a fair dose of heavy pathos, concerning the fact that this is all about two men (father and son) lacking the love of female company of their own - and the probable despair it could have contended by this. But this isn't about sad and depressing men (well, not exactly, anyway) with a melodramatic music score and suicidal 'I can't take anymore, cuz I haven't got a woman in my life!' finale. No, the lemmings can fear no competition here, as these two are far too focused on being hoist by their perturb to worry about that fatal emotion - and this film is far more of an escaped straight jacket job than that! In fact, this is about as serious as a wacky pair of flashing underpants to grace any form of pathos, when the crash, bang, whollop atmos going on with father and son constantly trying to thwart and out wit each other, to win the flesh (I mean heart) of fair and sweet Mimi. Love isn't an easy thing, is it? The opening sequence is a very funny, too, with Mimi walking along the town's street and all the local men dropping their jaws, cars, tyres and falling over themselves at the sight of this heavenly maiden entering their town. She then seeks lodgings with Cheol Dong and Dong Hyun, so that she can open a shop of her own, and considering that Cheol Dong is also a prized business man in his own right (albeit it that its related to toilet rolls), produces the opportunity for him to help get Mimi under way with her own shop. Not that her business plan is priority one, when Cheol Dong decides on a new wife. But Cheol Dong isn't the only love starved man around, and by the fact that his competition is as close as his own flesh and blood Dong Hyun - who also has additional eye popping sessions at Mimi - isn't going to find his wooing easy. Mimi doesn't realize what she is in for, either, when both father and son steadfastly vie for her attentions, going to extreme lengths in exercising their affections to win her heart. Although straight away they are more interested in Mimi's swinging from side to side bottom, than her heart. And as Mimi trips down some steps, and the two love strucks move quickly to save her fall, their hands lurch straight for her......well, you can probably imagine. All of this movie is a cartoon style of visual comedy and madcap humor (and even the prelude opening is a 3D generated animation sequence), with almost Three Stooges type nuttiness in what father and son attempt to do to get the other out of the way, to be with Mimi. Dong Hyun at one stage ties his father to his bed mattress with a leather strap to keep him trapped (bless), and Cheol Dong likewise seals his son in a strapped up bed bag (so touching), and even both have a boxing ring on top of their living quarters, to fight it all out over the woman of their (wet) dreams. Mimi is also,at first, all bemused by it all, and only wants to have help opening her shop. But bulging eyes and groping hands aside, Mimi finds herself constantly between the fisty cuffs and bonkers attentions of these two lacking in love men. Not only them either, as the local male town folk (who dropped nearly everything when Mimi first entered the town), also find Mimi an attractive addition, and the answer to their prayers. At one point, there are more men taking Mimi to task, than Dong Hyun as tee shirts. I found a lot of this film to be very funny and wacky, and director Seong Hoon Kim doesn't fail to entertain here. It all ends up okay after the wash too, (no not Dong Hyun's tee shirts) and turns out to be a worthwhile cuddly and zany comedy, to recommend for a fun night in with the pop corn. Hopefully, if you're a guy, too, and feel lacking in the love of a good woman, these two eccentrics of needful feminine beauty, are sure to get you doing absolutely nothing of the sort like this to woe (I mean woo) the lady of your dreams. Well, not unless you have at least 50 different tee shirts. Another good comedy this! And, hey..see how many tees of Tae Gyu Bong you can spot! |
