Korean shows picked at 'European Emmies'

Five Korean programs have been nominated for awards at the 48th Monte-Carlo Television Festival.

Slated to run from June 8 to 12, the festival -- regarded as the European Emmies -- has been selecting the best of worldwide television programming since 1961, after it was founded by Prince Rainier III of Monaco.

This year, Korea is making its mark at this international event, receiving nominations for five out of eight programming categories.

Among the five nominations, MBC managed to nab three, with its cable series "BSG Police" (ByeolSunGeom) and drama "Coffee Prince" as strong contenders for the best TV series categories. Four "BSG Police" cast members -- Ryoo Seung-yong, On Joo-wan, Ahn Nae-sang and Park Hyo-joo -- are also up for the best outstanding actor and actress awards.

An Uneven 'Quest' for Something More

One day while investigating a fake painting, Yoon Seo (Han Seok-kyu), a renowned Chosun-era scholar, comes across a dirty book secretly circulated among the lower class. Yoon Seo starts writing erotic novels himself and later asks ranking government official Gwang-heon (Lee Beom-soo) to draw the illustrations for his book. When Jeong Bin (Kim Min-jeong), a favorite concubine of the king (Ahn Nae-sang), develops a crush on Yoon, it provides the perfect fodder for his racy stories.

The movie 'Forbidden Quest' is filled with a refreshing humor rare in Korean films. Parodies of today's Internet postings and Chosun-era "room salons" -- a take on the hostess bars where nubile waitresses serve clients in their séparé -- are delightful. But, just like in "The King and the Clown", the racy jokes are told in a sophisticated manner without damaging the dignity of the noblemen. 'Desire' Movie Poster Rejected by Ratings Board

The poster of a movie 'Yok Mang' (Desire). The poster was censored for its graphic images. On the left is husband's lover Lee Dong-kyu, wife Lee Sua, and husband Ahn Nae-sang.

The Korea Media Rating Board censored the poster for the movie "Desire", by director Kim Eung-su and produced by Myung Film, saying the poster was too provocative. "Desire" is about a married couple who have sexual relations with the same man.
The poster depicts the shocking theme of a man and wife's desire for another man. The sexual love triangle is portrayed through the poster with the husband (starring Ahn Nae-sang), his lover (Lee Dong-kyu), and his wife (Lee Sua), who wants to take away her husband's lover.

Lee Dong-kyu, who in the movie has sexual intercourse with the husband and two women, was photographed half naked for the poster. The marketing director of Myung Film, Min Ji-eun, said that the photograph is not as shocking as other Korean movie posters. Min added that...| More
