Classic Korean Movie Gorae Sanyang to be Screened in New York City

Chung-Mu-Ro Express: Classic Korean Cinema will be present the movie Gorae Sanyang ("Whale Hunting") at the Anthology Film Archives in New York City on Thursday, July 24, 2008. The free screening will begin at 6:30 p.m., with a total running time of 112 minutes.

Gorae Sanyang was directed by Bae Chang-ho in 1984. Curator Im Hyun-ock will introduce the program and lead a discussion after the screening. The film will be in Korean with English subtitles.

Lead actor Ahn Seong-gi is known in Korea as one of the nation's best. Since the 1980s, he has appeared in almost 100 movies, including Two Cops (1993) and The Korean Peninsula (2006).

Gorae Sanyang tells the story of Byung-tae (Kim Soo-cheol), a young man who meets a beggar named Min-wu (Ahn) and Chun-ja (Lee Mi-sook), a mute woman being abused by a group of thugs for refusing to serve them as customers. Actress Han Eun-jeong, donates 100 million won to KAIST

KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) revealed on the 4th that popular actress Han Eun-jeong donated 100 million won ($US 100,000) to the university development fund.

That day, Han Eun-jeong visited the chancellor Seo Nam-pyo, and signed the agreement for the payment.

She said, "While filming the movie "The Divine Weapon", I've realized the importance of scientific technology. I hope this helps in some way for research".

Han Eun-jeong is from Dae-jeon, debuted in 1999 with MBC "Because of Love" and acted well in dramas such as "Seoul 1945". She is awaiting the premiere of the historical movie "The Divine Weapon", also starring Ahn Seong-gi.

KOREAN FILM COUNCIL ANNOUNCES MENTORS AND SUCCESSFUL FINALISTS FOR FILMMAKERS' DEVELOPMENT LAB 2008

June 3, 2008 (Los Angeles) - Now in its third year, the Korean Film Council's Filmmakers' Development Lab confirmed today the appointment of this year's Mentors, and also announced the five successful finalists who are this year's Fellows.

The Filmmakers' Development Lab (FDL) is an initiative of the Korean Film Council (KOFIC) to pair industry professionals and emerging filmmakers from Korea and the Korean diaspora to help realize their English language projects. The Fellows are chosen from open application and project submission process.

The program begins with one-on-one mentoring at an intensive one-week script development Lab which will be held in late June in Jeju Island, Korea.

The Fellows and their projects are then brought to Independent Film Week (previously IFP Market) in New York in September, and to the Co-Production Forum at the Pusan International Film Festival and Asian Film Market in Korea in October.

A backward glance for Mr. Bae

Failures become most obvious in retrospect. The past allows you to see situations objectively. At least that's how life works for director Bae Chang-ho.

Currently, The Korean Association of Cinematheques is holding a "Retrospective on Bae Chang-ho" in Seoul Art Cinema in Jongno, central Seoul.

The featured films include Bae's debut work, "People in the Slum" (1982) and "Whale Hunting" (1984). The retrospective started last Tuesday and ends this Sunday.

"At first, opening a retrospective was a burden for me", Bae said. "On second thought, however, it was a chance to look back on my career from a third-person point of view".

Those films that Bae thought were failures based on audience attendance turned out to be significant for the lessons they taught him.

"Looking back relates to the future", the director said. "For future reference when making films, it's important to be in touch with what the public is interested in".

From Kim Min-jeong to Kang Soo-yeon, Best 5 child actors

The futures of many child stars were generally depressing.

The childish image and the weight of the years were obstacles for child stars to become adult actors.

But even among them, there are stars who have succeeded in transforming into adults. The IS Entertainment Team has picked out the best 5 actors who started out as child stars.

Kim Min-jeong, who's charm comes from her big eyes, debuted in 1990 when she was eight, with MBC Best Theater "Widow".
