US Remake of Failan

SONG Hae-seong's "Failan" (2001) starring CHOI Min-sik and Cecilia CHEUNG will be remade by director Vadim Perelman. Filming is scheduled for this year's fall.

Vadim Perelman directed the drama The House of Sand and Fog. The adaptation of the screenplay is in the hands of Jose Rivera, whose credits include The Motorcycle Diaries. US production company, Beacon Pictures and Landscape pictures teamed up as co-producers.

In "Failan", a man takes on the mafia who exploited his immigrant wife. He never met her, since it was only a formal agreement set up by the mafia. However, he learns about her faith through the letters she left him before she died and it compels him to seek revenge for her.

The remake relocates the story to New York. The immigrant woman will be changed into a Russian and she will fall in the hands of the Russian mafia.

Autumn time and the living is teary

The wind's blowing. The leaves are falling. It's that time of year again, the season when we have an excuse for eyes that run and noses that sniffle. In other words it's safe for everybody to watch sad love stories and let the tears flow. You can always claim you have a cold.
Since yesterday, the Sponge house has been showing 10 of the most popular sad dramas made since 2000. Four directors of these famous tear-jerker films will also make appearances and there will be time set aside for the audience to ask questions.
"It is going to be a warm and meaningful event for fans of sad love stories", said Spongehouse's Choi Ji-yeon, the organizer of the event.

KIM Hae-gon debuts as a director

The upcoming drama "The Unbearable Lightness of Dating (previously titled as: The Face That I Miss) will mark the directorial debut of actor/screenwriter KIM Hae-gon. The male lead in the film is KIM Seung-woo ("Woman on the Beach"), while JANG Jin-yeong ("Blue Swallow") will play the female lead character. The story is about a doomed romance between a man who is engaged to a woman he doesn't love - chosen by his mother and a room salon hostess. The film is scheduled for a release in September.

KIM Hae-gon is known as one of the most talented persons in the Korean film industry. Among the talents he's recognized for is screenwriting. The screenplay for Failan (2001) starring CHOI Min-sik and Cecilia CHEUNG is one of the scripts for which he is particularly praised.

Synthetic Asia finds Western appeal

Long before the production of "The Promise" began, Chen Kaige says he had originally planned on setting its story in the "3,000 years ago future", somewhere in Asia.
That's a good description of his latest film, which at $35 million broke the box-office record in China set by "Titanic".
The film traces the tragic life of the Princess Qingcheng (Cecilia Cheung), who was cursed as a child to lose every man she loves. Years later, she has three men fall in love with her: Guangming (Hiroyuki Sanada), a ruthless general; Kunlun (Jang Dong-gun), the general's slave who has superhuman speed, and Wuhuan (Nicholas Tse), an evil warrior who fights Kunlun, who is impersonating Guangming (confused yet?).
One of the curious elements of "The Promise" is that it doesn't tell specifically when or where the story is set, although the story is told in Chinese.

Korean Movie Star Jang Dong-gun's new film The Promise Opens in America

Currently one of the most sought-after leading actors in Asia, Korean Jang Dong-gun may be coming to a theater near you. Multi-talented fashion model, singer, TV star, and film actor, Jang Dong-gun stars in the new Chinese film "The Promise", which opens on May 5, 2006 in 58 cities throughout the United States, including Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Cleveland, Detroit, etc. Warner Brothers also announced screenings in eight Canada cities, including Ottawa and Calgary.

Jang Dong-gun made his debut in the 1997 film Repechage, but soared to stardom with the 2001 film Friends, which was one of the most successful Korean films ever made. One of his more recent films, Taegukgi, broke all box office records when it was released in 2004.
