Korea is increasingly becoming an important film market ― ranking sixth and seventh in the world in terms of audience size and ticket sales, respectively, according to the Korean Film Council.

Last week, the Asia junket for the anticipated blockbuster "Iron Man" took place in Seoul ― the second big Hollywood event to be held here the one for since last summer's "Transformers".

In international film festivals, more and more Korean filmmakers and actors are stealing the limelight, notably actress Jeon Do-yeon (2007 Cannes Best Actress) and directors Kim Ki-duk (2004 Best Director awards at both Venice and Berlin), Park Chan-wook (2004 Cannes Grand Prix) and Im Kwon-taek (2002 Cannes Best Director, 2007 Dubai Lifetime Achievement Award).

Choi Min-soo Charged with Assault and Battery

Actor Choi Min-soo, known for his masculine and charismatic personality, was charged with beating up a Mr. Yoo, a 73-year-old man, and driving 200 meters with the old man on the hood of his car.

Police report says that Choi and Yoo got into an altercation when the old man reprimanded Choi for cussing while he was stuck in traffic in the Itaewon area of Seoul. Choi apparently beat the old man with his fist several times and tried to get away when people recognized him. But Yoo got in front of the car to stop Choi from leaving the scene. Witnesses say that Choi just drove off for about 200 meters with Yoo hanging onto the hood before being stopped by the police called to the scene. Yoo also accused Choi of threatening him with a knife, but Choi has denied that part of the accusation.

Top stars' next work anticipated

Top stars including Jeon Do-yeon, Choi Min-sik, Song Kang-ho, and Seol Kyeong-gu are emerging as saviors of Korean movies. From blockbuster hits to cinematographic movies, they aim to revitalize various genres this summer.

Jeon Do-yeon, who received the Cannes Film Festival award for Best Actress for "Secret Sunshine" is working hard to finish filming "A Fine Day".

This movie is about an unemployed, single woman in her thirties who meets an ex-boyfriend and embarks on an adventure for a day.

She acts with Ha Jeong-woo, who is raising stock prices with this year's best movie, "The Chaser".

As soon as filming ends at the end of this month, they will go into the latter half of production.

Park Ji-eun, the marketing team leader of the production company said, "There isn't a definite genre and plans for marketing, but it is certain that you can see this film in theaters in the later half of the year".

Korean Actor Choi to Co-star with Robert De Niro

The Korean actor Choi Min-soo will co-star with Hollywood stars Robert De Niro and Andy Garcia in the film "Street of Dreams", Korea's Yonhap news reported Tuesday (March 18).

"Street of Dreams" is a 40 billion won co-production between U.S.-based FR Productions, Korea's Hyun Jin Cinema and Japan's Wides Japan. The film will be produced by Fred Roos, the producer of "The Godfather: Part II" and "The Godfather: Part III".

Hyun Jin Cinema has produced Korean films such as "Holiday" and "My Wife is a Gangster 3". Wides Japan has previously made "Deep Love" and "26 Years Diary" that showed the story of a Korean-Japanese man who sacrificed his life to save a Japanese passenger in the subway.

"Street of Dreams" is based on the true story of Montana Joe, a legendary Japanese-American gangster in the 1960s in the United States. Choi will play the role of Montana's Korean friend, Eddie. This will be Choi's first Hollywood movie.

Korean actor Choi Min-soo will co-star alongside Hollywood stars Robert De Niro and Andy Garcia in the up-coming film "Street of Dreams", Yonhap news reported Tuesday.

"Street of Dreams" is a 40 billion won co-production between US-based FR Productions, Korea's Hyun Jin Cinema and Japan's Wides Japan. It will be produced by Fred Roos, whose credits include "The Godfather: Part II" and "The Godfather: Part III".
