Lee Yo-won, Jang Sin-yeong and Han Ga-in, the young 'missy' stars made a remarkable achievement this year. Despite the fact they are married, they took the roles of unmarried women in their dramas over other young, single actresses. They became 'young bride' and some even became mothers in their early 20s. However, they are now enjoying the height of prosperity of their acting career with their young beauty and maturing performance shaped from such dramatic life experience as their own marriage.

Lee Yo-won, a mother of 3 years old daughter, made her coming back with SBS 'Surgeon Bong Dal-hee' early this year, which was followed by a film 'May 18', in which she took a role of nurse, Park Sinae, displaying her strong fighting spirit. Presently, she is appearing in KBS2 'Bad Love' with a top star, Kwon Sang-woo.

Jang Sin-yeong, who published parturiency and a bikini picture album after the childbirth, also made her coming back with MBC 'Winter Bird' after giving birth to a healthy...| More

Perhaps a reflection of the growing awareness of an increasingly multiracial Korea, a growing number of foreign faces are appearing on Korean television. More and more Korean dramas are casting foreign-born actors and actresses, although in supporting roles.

In recent years, hunky actors like Daniel Henney and Dennis O, who are partly Korean, have won the hearts of fans, even though they can barely speak Korean.

Now, it's the turn of good-looking and fluent Korean speakers like exotic British-Japanese Eva Popiel and blonde Belgian Julian Quintart to make a splash on the entertainment scene.

Foreign Beauties

Eva Popiel, a young Japanese-British woman who attracted attention after appearing in the hit KBS talk show "Beauties Chatterbox", is now parlaying her popularity into an acting career.

At the press conference for the KBS1 daily series "Likable or Not" ("I Hate You, But It's Fine"), Popiel attracted media attention because th...| More

Hines Ward, the mixed-race American football star, was Korea's new found hero last year. The American football player, son to an African-American soldier and a Korean mother, captivated Koreans not only because he was the MVP title in the Super Bowl but also because he tried to help mixed-race people in Korea.

Support for multiracial people in Korea is likely to continue as another biracial star is on a visit to the country to meet underprivileged children suffering from invisible discrimination due to their "unique" looks.

Ursula Mayes, Korean-American model and actress, came to Seoul with her mother Lee Mi-heui on Sunday to help support biracial children.

"Because I understand the hardship, I can give ten times more to people who are going through the hardship", said Mayes in an interview with The Korea Herald on Monday at a hotel in Seoul.

"I will do a lot of charity work while I am here for mixed-blood children. I feel so close to them", she said. During her five-day vi...| More

December 30, 2005 ㅡ We asked our Life & Style Desk reporters what they thought were the top ten stories in 2005. The answers ranged from embarrassed celebrities and an increasingly upscale shopping culture to a public embrace of those formerly shunned ― the autistic, the half-foreign and the merely average people in our midst.

Forged or real?

In March, drawings by Lee Jung-seop, one of the best-known Korean artists of the 20th century, were the subject of a forgery dispute. Thus started a scandal that has rippled through Korea's art community and prompted doubts about the authenticity of other works circulating among Seoul galleries. The controversy over the drawings intensified as they originated from the artist's family. The artist's son filed a libel lawsuit against the people who claimed the drawings were fake. A police investigation concluded in October the the drawings were indeed forgeries.

2005 will be remembered as a year of new trends in Korea's entertainment industry. On the one hand, there were the large-scale dramas starring big names that were clearly produced with an eye on Asian markets that showed themselves receptive to the Korean wave. But equally importantly, some smaller dramas then offered opportunities for new faces, who were cast as an afterthought when the original choice plumbed for the big-budget production.

Another distinct trend was the emergence of half-Korean actors to fill the gap left as one heartthrob after another trooped to barracks for his mandatory military service out of fear of alienating his fans. Last year, some stars were severely criticized for attempting to dodge their military service. With women power increasingly making its presence felt in every sector of society, it was no wonder that a new breed of assertive heroine captured the hearts of the public.

As for the people who brought us the shows, three major national terrestr...| More
