Actors who starred in movies written by Guiyeoni have become top stars in the movie industry. These stars are Kang Dong-won, Jo Han-seon, Song Seung-heon, and Jang Geun-seok.

"Temptation of Wolves" helped Kang Dong-won and Jo Han-seon, who were new actors then, to rise to the top. They played high school students. Kang Dong-won captured the hearts of high school girls with his perfect looks, and Jo Han-seon captured audiences with his tough, rebel image. After this movie, they have been cast in various movies and have become top actors.

Song Seung-heon was in "The Guy Was Cool" as a rebellious high school student and acted with Jeong Da-bin, who is now deceased. He played a trustworthy boyfriend who always helped his girlfriend to get out of trouble. Although he was rough to other friends, he was affectionate toward his girlfriend. He plays a charismatic character in "Fate", which is playing now.

Internet Writer Guiyeoni Sparks "Hallyu" Wave in Japan

Guiyeoni, a new-generation writer who writes novels on the Internet, has recently visited Japan to publish the Japanese version of her novel "Temptation Of Wolves". This two-volume novel is a love story about teenagers. A movie based on this story will be released in Japan on March 19.

"Temptation Of Wolves" rose to fame in 2001 when Guiyeoni began writing it on the Internet. Publishers and filmmakers decided to produce a movie and publish the novel as a book when it became popular with high school girls by word of mouth.

The book, which was published in December 2002, became a bestseller, selling some 300,000 copies. In July 2004, the movie based on the novel made headlines for starring such top-rated actors as Kang Dong-won, Jo Han-seon and Lee Cheong-ah, who played the lead roles.

A Trend of Internet-based Novels Being Adapted for Films

Films produced from 'Internet published novels' have become a trend in Korea.

Two Internet novel adapted films, He Was Cool - The Guy was Cool (Geunomeun Meoshit seot da) and Romance on their own - Temptation of Wolves (Nukdae eui Yoohok) were released almost at the same time this summer. Both films' original stories were written by the same person: the popular on-line storywriter, Lee Yun-se (better known by her penname, Guiyeoni). Her new on-line serial story 'To My Boyfriend' has also been picked up for adaptation and other on-line stories such as 'Baekjowa Baeksu', 'Samsusaeng Sarang Iyagi', 'Oktapbang Goyangyi' (Cat in the Rooftop Room), 'Keanu Reeves Kkosigi', 'Saekma Jeonseol', 'Naesarang Iljinnyo', 'Mihonmo Iyagi', 'Naneun Aknyoilsubakae upda', are in development or pre-production stages to be produced as films.

Delinquent teenagers: a new cultural trend?

When 19-year-old Lee Yoon-sei, better known by her penname Guiyeoni, first released the Internet novel "The Guy was Cool" in 2001, teenagers went wild with enthusiasm.
After her novels got published in paperback and one became a bestseller, critics called this "a fresh shock to the current literature". Since today's readers crave quick, easy reads, serious books for highbrows have much less standing in the market, they said.

Spurred by their popularity, two of Guiyeoni's novels "The Guy Was Cool" and "Temptation of Wolves" have recently been made into movies. However, their popularity hasn't been able wipe out the criticism that though deliciously tempting, these novels are too shallow to be called literature.

Memories of murderous success in 2003

This was a very good year for Korean cinema. Perhaps actress Moon So-ri said it best at a screening of one of her films in Paris: "French cinema has a history of over 100 years, but not Korea. If France is an adult, Korea is a child. But it is a very strong child".

Now is an exciting and important time in the development of the "very strong child", and 2003 will be remembered as a highlight, regardless of the direction Korean cinema takes in the years to come.

This year began with the film industry losing a great director but gaining great influence when Lee Chang-dong was named Minister of Culture and Tourism in the newly inaugurated administration of President Roh Moo-hyun.
