An annual film event showcasing works rarely seen in Korean movie theatres has opened in Korea's southwest.
The Jeonju International Film Festival launched its nine-day run offering visitors a chance to appreciate independent and non-mainstream movies.
Our Son Heekyung reports from Jeonju.
Curtains went up for the eighth Jeonju International Film Festival with the official announcement from the Jeonju mayor.
Around two thousand visitors and dozens of industry bigwigs attended the opening act here.
The ceremony began with Korean celebrities and foreign guests walking down the red carpet.
Actors Kim Myungmin and Park Solmi hosted tonights glittering opening act.
A Korean breakdance crew also performed.
Then came time for the opening film "Off Road" by Korean first-time director Han Seung-ryong.
The screening was for the media, and shortly after, a news conference was held with the director and cast of the film.

International Film Festival to Open in Chonju

The southwestern city of Chonju (Jeonju) will be in a festive mode this month as it hosts a series of film, musical, cuisine and cultural festivals beginning Thursday.

In the past, the city held all four major festivals together in April and May but beginning this year, they will be held separately.

"When we hosted them together, it was hard to see their separate identities", Song Ha-jin, mayor of Chonju, told The Korea Times in a written interview. "To develop them as regional, national and international festivals, it is necessary to hold them separately and let them fully show off their charms".

The four major festivals are the international film festival from today to May 4; the mulberry paper culture festival from May 3 to 6; the Taesasup Festival from May 14 to 15; and a cultural festival from June 16 to 19. Cuisine festivals are scheduled for fall.

Song also believes holding the festivals separately will attract more visitors.

Film Fest to Open in Jeonju Next Week

The 8th annual Jeonju International Film Festival (JIFF) will kick off on April 26 in Chonju, North Cholla Province.

The festival's search for the most innovative and experimental films through digital media will continue this year with a total of 185 movies from 37 countries being shown during its nine-day run. The showcased films have been selected from 1,035 submissions.

The festival opens with the local film "Off Road" by director Han Seung-ryong and closes with the Hong Kong film "Exiled" by director Johnnie To.

The opening film is a road movie, which revolves around a bank clerk who becomes a taxi driver to earn more money. But his plan is foiled when he becomes the hostage of a bank robber. The closing film is the story of a group of gangsters who unite after a past gang member who betrayed them in the past returns.

The Jeonju International Film Festival is set to kick off its 10-day run on April 26, featuring 185 films from 37 countries. The eighth annual film fest, the largest in the southwestern region, focuses on independent films and their progressive perspectives.

The opening film is "Off Road", a drama directed by Han Seung-ryong, which depicts the trouble-laden life of youth struggling on the fringes of society. The entire film was shot in the city of Jeonju, the film festival's venue.

"We did not select the film as the opening feature because it was shot in Jeonju", said Min Myung-rok, chief festival organizer. "But it is a fine road movie that portrays the difficult lives of young people along with the beautiful landscape of South Jeolla Province".

Closing the festival is "Exiled", directed by Johnnie To of Hong Kong. This action film features a fight between gangster members, demonstrating the director's expertise in mixing realism and romanticism through action sequences.
