Although Las Vegas may be described as the city of opportunity, a casino is not a safe bet.

Very few folks ends up getting something for nothing. Far more leave the casino in ruin, like the young business traveler in the ongoing musical "Gambler" (LG Arts Center).

It's a common subject, but the mesmerizing lights and glowing lines of slot machines, when combined with super-sexy showgirls and plenty of liquor play with the mind of even the most discerning businessperson.

In the musical written by Eric Woolfson - best known here as the lead singer, songwriter and executive producer of the British progressive rock band Alan Parsons Project - Boss (Heo Joon-ho) is the manager of "Baghdad Casino", a huge money-sucking temple of desire located in Vegas.

Summer Big Bang for Musicals

The Korean musical market is literally witnessing a "big bang" this summer.

Korean musical-goers will have a rare opportunity this summer to enjoy both critically-acclaimed and commercially successful Broadway musicals such as "Man of La Mancha", "Cats", "Chicago", "Gambler", "Hedwig", and "Thrill Me". We enlisted musical critics to offer their evaluations of the musicals based on five criteria –entertainment, music, cast, stage, and story.

"Cats" feeds the audience's eyes with splendid dances and extraordinary stage settings. Shin Hyeon-joon and Heo Joon-ho to Stage Charity Concert

Actors Shin Hyeon-joon and Heo Joon-ho will stage a charity concert Jan. 24 at the Melon-X concert hall in Seoul to raise funds for the needy. The guests will include singers Baek Ji-young and KCM as well as actress Choi Ji-woo.

The concert will be held as a preview of the actors' new movie "Last Present - 2007" due to open in February. A person from the movie's production firm said one of the movie's scenes shows a child who needs a liver transplant but has no money to pay for the surgery. Shin and Heo, who play the lead roles in the movie, decided to stage the concert in line with the movie's theme.

The concert will be held free of charge. Audience members will be welcome to make donations voluntarily. The raised funds will be donated to the production team of the KBS TV charity program "Love Request", which is aimed at helping those in need.

Korean filmmakers bet on large-scale projects

Many local movie productions suffered setbacks last year, due to increased costs and the strengthened position of Hollywood blockbusters. In 2008, leading filmmakers are betting on large-scale projects to turn things around for the embattled local film industry.

At the forefront of Korean films' counterattack is Kim Ji-woon's oriental western "The Good, The Bad, The Weird", whose production cost is estimated at a whopping 15 billion won ($16 million). Hedging the huge financial risk is none other than a star-studded cast. Well-known Korean Wave stars Lee Byeong-heon, Song Kang-ho and Jeong Woo-seong play central characters for the film set in Manchuria of the 1930s.

Lee, who is enjoying soaring popularity in Japan, takes the role of a bandit, while Song turns into a train robber and Jeong becomes a bounty hunter.
