Director Writer

Biography

IM Kwon-taek was born on May 2, 1936, in Jangseong, Jeollanam-do(South Jeolla Province). He grew up in the southern city of Gwangju, where he completed high school. During the Korean War his family suffered considerable hardships and losses in the fighting, and he moved to Busan in search of work. From Busan he moved to Seoul in 1955, and met the film director CHUNG Chang-hwa. From this time IM started to work as a production assistant on CHUNG’s film < The Story of Jangha & Hongryun > (1956). After five years IM was recommended by CHUNG for the position of film director, and he completed his first feature ("Dumanganga Jal Ikkora") in 1962. He went on to become a prolific director of films in various popular genres until the late 1970s. While Korean cinema was experiencing a sharp decline during the 1970s, after undergoing two decades of rapid growth, IM Kwon-taek’s career blossomed with the success of his first serious-themed feature films. Beginning with his 1978 film < The Genealogy > ("Jokbo") and continuing with < The Hidden Hero > ("Gitbal-eomneun Gisu", 1979), ("Jagko", 1980) and < Mandala >("Mandala", 1981), his films became the talk of the film industry among both domestic and international critics alike. IM gained worldwide fame at international film festivals with < Surrogate Woman > ("Sibaji", 1986), < Come Come Come Upward >("Aje Aje Bara Aje", 1989) and < Sopyonje > ("Seopyeonje", 1993), becoming the most recognizable Korean film director of his era. In 2000, < Chunhyang > ("Chunhyang-jeon") became the first Korean film ever to enter the competition section at Cannes. IM Kwon-taek has won numerous international awards, including the Best Director Award at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival for< Chihwaseon >. He was also awarded an honorary Golden Bear award for his lifetime achievements at the Berlin Film Festival in 2005.

The center was small enough that if you came late, all the tickets were sold out. We went so often we became friends with the center's projectionist.

Bae Chang-ho, director of "The Last Witness" and "Road"
"I was a college student and an aspiring film director in the early 1970s when I first visited the French Cultural Center.
The majority of us went because the number of foreign films imported to Korea was limited to 20 or so a year and most were commercial Hollywood films that were heavily edited by the government.
We really didn't have that many choices. The center presented a rare venue for auteurist films from the French New Wave cinema. I remember there was a screening room on the first floor called Salle Renoir. I don't know if the name referred to the French impressionist or his filmmaker son, Jean Renoir.
When you went there, you expected to meet certain people. These people later became noted directors, critics and French experts. It was also one of the few places wher...| More

Celebrated Korean director Im Kwon-taek (72) visits the 30th International Moscow Film Festival for the first time in 20 years. The festival is presenting a special retrospective on the filmmaker.
The 30th International Moscow Film Festival which opened on June 19 is presenting a special retrospective on legendary Korean director Im Kwon-taek. The event prompted the 72-year-old filmmaker to visit the Russian city for the first time in 20 years, but Im didn't seem happy when the Chosun Ilbo met up with him there. Rather than his feelings on visiting Moscow again, foremost on the director's mind were his concerns about the Korean film industry.

Im declared, with a note of guilt, that everyone in the Korean film industry -- including himself -- should be blamed for the falling market share of Korean films. "Movie fans have grown disappointed with Korean films because those working in the industry have just tried to jump on the bandwagon of the industry's boom without careful preparati...| More

An impressive 12 film retrospective, surveying the work of legendary Korean director IM Kwon-taek, will be held in the Russian capital of Moscow this June. Running the 19th to the 28th at the Moscow State Central Cinema Museum in Arbat Square. Director IM has completed 100 feature films in his lifetime, winning the best director prize at Cannes in 2002 for Chihwaseon.

Cinema Museum director Naum Kleiman will introduce the retrospective with director IM and his wife especially invited to Moscow for the event. Kleiman, with the help of IM An-cha, vice-chairman of the committee for Korea's Jeonju International Film Festival, selected 12 representative films out of the director's 100-feature oeuvre.

Films included in the program are "Genealogy" (1978), the Buddhist-themed "Mandala" (1981), "Daughter of the Flames" (1983), Venice Best Actress (KANG Soo-yeon) winner "The Surrogate Mother" (1986), North-South family reunion drama "Gilsoddeum" (1986), all-time classic "Seopyeonje" ...| More

So long to the 61th Cannes Film Festival, which ended last Sunday. Koreans didn't have much reason for celebration this year.

Na Hong-jin, the director of "The Chaser" and one of the 11 candidates for the Camera d'Or (The Golden Camera Award), lost out to Steve McQueen, the director of "Hunger".

Korean fans had hoped that another prize would follow last year's award to Jeon Do-yeon for Best Actress in "Secret Sunshine" (2007).

Previous Korean award winners from Cannes also include Im Kwon-taek's "Strokes of Fire" (2002), which won the Best Director Award, and "Old Boy" (2004), which won the Grand Prix.

However, there are still reasons for hope for the Korean film industry.

Director Kim Ji-woon's "The Good, the Bad and the Weird", which screened at the festival's main venue last weekend, received positive responses from viewers.

The film was set in Manchuria during the Japanese colonial period and is about three Korean outlaws there in the 1930s.

It is based on Serg...| More

Several decades-old films from Korea will be re-released in Seoul this spring, as two of Korea's older movie theaters try to attract new audiences.

Hollywood Theater, located alongside the popular Insa-dong traditional shopping district, has recently devoted one of its screens to re-releases of classic Korean and international films. It is currently screening both Ben-Hur and the 1976 Korean film High School Joker by SEOK Rae-myeong. Well remembered by viewers in their forties now, High School Joker has attracted 366 viewers in limited screenings since its re-release.

Meanwhile, Dream Cinema in Seodaemun, the last old-style single screen theater in Korea, has agreed to co-host together with Hollywood Theater a special showcase of four classic Korean films from May 15 to June 19.

The four films, which will not be subtitled, include "High School Joker"; veteran director IM Kwon-taek's "Surrogate Woman" (1986), which won a Best Actress Award for KANG Soo-yeon at the Venice Inte...| More
