Ryoo Seung-wan Remakes Short into Feature

Director RYOO Seung-wan has cast brother RYOO Seung-beom and actress KONG Hyo-jin in an expanded remake of his 35-minute short film "Dajjimawa Lee" (2000), originally made exclusively to screen on the internet. Actor IM Won-hee ("Le Grand Chef"), who also starred in the original, will join RYOO and KONG in the updated version.

"Dajjimawa Lee" became a sensation when it was released over the internet, receive more than a million views. The film followed on the success of director RYOO's low budget astonishing debut "Die Bad", a US $65 000 action film with gripping if gritty visuals and an adroitly woven plot.

Dajjimawa was intended as a parody of / homage to Korean action films of the 70s. The term dajjimawa was often used in the film industry to describe action scenes. Dialogue in RYOO's spoof was often taken verbatim from genre films of that era, such as "Kyung-ah, there's nothing do. How 'bout a little kiss?" "Le Grand Chef" Tops 2nd half of 2007

"Le Grand Chef" became the top film of the second part of 2007 when it surpassed the 2.5 million mark in its first month, and went on to accumulate 2.9 million viewers since last weekend. The film is closing in on the 3 million mark, which it should easily surpass, according to an earlier prediction by its production company ShowEast.

The adaptation of HEO Yeong-man's manwha (comparable to Japanese manga and Chinese manwha) proved to be not only attractive to young women – Korea's main film audience – but also to males from several generations, making it a suitable family film. Last year's blockbuster "Tazza: The High Rollers" ("The War of Flower") is also an adaptation of a HEO's manwha.

JEON Yoon-soo's "Le Grand Chef" stars IM Won-hee and KIM Kang-woo, and is about a cooking contest between rival chef families both related to former royal chefs. At stake is a legendary historical cooking knife, once used by the last Korean royal chef in the Chosun dynasty.

"Le Grand Chef" Whets Appetites at AFM

Released locally November 1st, Show East's cooking drama "Le Grand Chef" is drawing strong interest from buyers at the 2007 American Film Market, currently running Oct 31 – Nov 7 in LA. The film has been sold to Festive Films for Singapore and Taiwan, to Sundream for Hong Kong, to A.O.E. for Malaysia and to M Pictures for Thailand. Talks to take the film to China are also being negotiated.

Directed by JEON Yoon-soo, known previously for melodramas such as "My Girl And I" (2005) and "Besame Mucho" (2001), "Le Grand Chef" moves out of the bedroom and into the kitchen. The film is anticipated locally for its parallels with pan-Asian hit Korean TV drama "Jewel In the Palace" ("Dae Jang Geum"), which had a palace cook as its chief character.

Inspired by the phenomenally popular comic series of the same name, "Le Grand Chef" (Sikgaek) offers an "Iron Chef"-style edge that dashes through an explosively colorful array of Korean dishes. Revolving around a fierce cooking competition, "Chef " is stimulating throughout, but is ultimately more "gluttonous" than tasteful.

A Japanese man has stepped forward to redeem past evils involving the chef to Korea's last emperor Seonjong, and a nationwide culinary battle ensues. Archenemies Seong-chan (Kim Kang-woo) and Bong-ju (Im Won-hee) rekindle their longstanding rivalry as they sharpen their knives. Five years before, the two had competed to take over Unamjeong, a renowned Korean restaurant. But Seong-chan suffers a critical blow when his blowfish dish poisons the jurors. Distraught, he retires to the countryside, while Bong-ju exploits the wealth and fame of his inheritance.
