With the Beijing Olympics over, broadcasting networks face the challenge of filling the void. Both KBS and MBC have already stepped up to the plate with two brand-new dramas: "Love and Marriage" and "East of Eden".
Despite the recent dismissal of the network's former head, Jung Yun-joo, KBS is determined to prove that it will continue to air quality shows. The channel's latest Monday and Tuesday night installment, "Love and Marriage", seeks to boost viewer ratings.
KBS faces some stiff competition. MBC, which failed to score high viewer ratings with their last Monday and Tuesday night series "When It's At Night, is aiming high with its epic drama, "East of Eden".
Featuring a star-studded cast, including heartthrob Song Seung-heon, this 50-episode series reportedly racked up 25 billion won ($23 million) in production costs. Like the novel by Nobel Prize winner John Steinbeck, this drama charts the tumultuous struggles between two households. The similarities, however, end there...| More

Variety, an American film and pop art magazine, has attracted public attention by giving critical acclaim to MBC TV's drama "Princess Hours", also known as "The Palace", calling it a production that has shown the future of Korea's TV drama industry.
In its latest edition, Variety said, "The 24-episode drama 'Princess Hours' is a production that shows the future of Korea's TV drama industry, while enjoying high viewer ratings of nearly 30 percent".
Variety also said, "More than 230,000 dollars (230 million won) per episode was spent on making elaborately built sets, such as traditional houses and Western interior decorations. If such a trend continues, Korean TV drama producers will spend more and more on expenses".
The magazine introduced the drama's set, food, and traditional costume designers. It said, "These designers enhanced the aesthetic levels of the drama, ultimately succeeding in luring young viewers".
Variety added, "The Korean film industry also played a big role...| More

Actor Kim Jeong-hoon, a former member of the male music group "UN", is expected to captivate the hearts of Japanese fans.
Kim, a former singer, has branched his career into acting, appearing in the popular MBC Wednesday-Thursday miniseries entitled "Palace" (written by In Eun-ah and directed by Hwang In-roe). On the back of his newfound popularity as an actor, he has planned to expand his scope of activities both as a singer and actor in Japan.
An official from Kim's agency said on Mar. 10, "Kim Jeong-hoon will engage in lively activities in Japan. He will concurrently act as a singer and actor. Currently, he will act in a TV drama, as well as record an album, in Japan after 'Palace' comes to an end".
Export contracts for "Palace" ("Princess Hours") have been signed with China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, the Philippines, and Vietnam. Negotiations are underway with Japan. If "Palace" ("Princess Hours") begins airing in Asian countries, its actors and actresses, such as Kim, Y...| More

'Palace' ("Princess Hours") (written by In Eun-ah, and directed by Hwang In-roi), a popular MBC drama broadcast every Wednesday and Thursday, is just an inch away from setting a new record of attracting 30% of the total number of viewers. It is also making good progress among international viewers.
The drama's producer has currently made a contract with distributors in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Thailand, and is also working on deals with local distributors in Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore, a report said.
In addition, it is in discussion with Japan, the biggest drama-export market, for a possible sale, which makes 'Palace' ("Princess Hours") a drama that continues the tradition of success started by Korean Wave dramas, such as 'Winter Sonata' and 'A Jewel In The Palace' ("Dae Jang Geum").
"The amount of income from these confirmed contracts on exporting 'Palace' reaches up to 2 million dollars (about 1.94 billion Korean won), and after making a contract wi...| More
