More and more Korean pop stars are making some serious noise all across Asia. Not to mention such established stars as BoA and "Rain", many young, up and coming singing and dancing talents are now targeting overseas markets from the very beginning, even before their debut here.

For one thing, this is a barometer showing the growing popularity of Korean pop musicians in the rest of Asia, which must be highly encouraging for both musicians and producers. Behind this are, however, ever-diminishing album sales in the local pop music industry.

'Spring Waltz' sold to nine countries

Renowned producer Yoon Seok-ho's ambitious new TV series "Spring Waltz" is adding new momentum to the Korean Wave sweeping Asia and beyond with nine countries signing contracts for broadcast rights even before the drama has been shown in Korea.

"So far, we have signed contracts with Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Macao, Brunei and the Philippines, and are discussing contract terms with other countries including the United States, Austria, China, Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar", said Park In taek, head of Yoons Color, the production company of "Spring Waltz".

The drama maker has already earned over 5 billion won, which covers the production costs of the drama, Park added. The profits from exports are shared between Yoons Color and the drama's broadcaster KBS.

Because Yoons Color holds the drama's sole copyright, countries that have bought the broadcast rights have to make extra payments in case of remakes.

An 'irresistible trickster' to meet viewers in 'My Girl'

Another "sassy" girl is to meet TV audiences every Wednesday and Thursday nights beginning this week, as director Jeon Ki-sang unfolds his jovial imagination in a new SBS drama "My Girl". As a "professional" trickster, this new heroine is promised to be cheekier and sassier than the last.

Through the KBS drama "Sassy Girl, Chun-hyang", which ended with overwhelming success in March, director Jeon has already proven his talent in producing romantic comedies with a "different" type of heroine.

Director Jeon's motto is to produce a drama that he himself can "laugh his head off" while watching.

"It's not like I have an exceptional philosophy about drama-making. I just want people to have a good laugh, and realize in between the laughs that life is actually quite joyful", Jun told reporters in a news conference last week.
