PiFan to Hold Genre Project Market

The Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival (PiFan), now in its 12th edition, is launching a project market under the heading Network of Asian Fantastic Films (NAFF2008). The 5 day platform will be launched during PiFan's 10-day run July 18 – 27 and will present projects from Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, the US and the UK among others.

NAFF2008 was conceived to provide an impetus to Asian genre cinema and to encourage development and financing of officially selected genre projects. The main section, 'It Project' will present 16 projects from 8 countries and will take place July 20 – 22 at the Koryo Hotel in Bucheon. Business meetings, jury deliberation and cash awards will provide filmmakers exciting opportunities to advance their projects.

Ryoo Seung-wan's action extravaganza draws upon classics of the genre

A Seoul cop, Tae-su (Korea's top action choreographer/stunt artist Jeong Doo-hong), receives the shocking news that his childhood friend Wang-jae (a Ryoo Seung-wan regular, Ahn Kil-gang), a retired wise guy, has been stabbed to death by a handful of punks. Tae-su goes back to his hometown, On-sung, to attend Wang-jae's funeral. He immediately smells a rat.

The town is under the thumb of their old buddy Pil-ho (Lee Beom-soo, "Oh! Brothers", "Superstar Mr. Gam"), now a big shot gangster and involved in a citywide real estate development scheme. Classic horror theme and martial arts collaboration

"Arang" uses a classic theme of the horror genre ― a serial murder.
So-young (Song Yoon-Ah), a female detective who has just returned from a suspension, teams up with Hyun-gi (Lee Dong-wook) for a multiple homicide investigation.

The two find that all the murder victims had known a girl who went missing 10 years earlier from a seaside village. When So-young visits the village, she hears a bizarre rumor of a female ghost that appears in a salt store in the village.

"Arang" is the debut film by director Ahn Sang-hoon yet it shows the essence of a classic horror flick.
Song's performance as the film's female lead, following her bitter horror debut in "Face", for which she earned bad reviews, has progressed noticeably in the role of the female detective. Lee's film debut is also moderately successful.

Popular director Ryoo Seung-wan directed this action-packed film and played a leading character. It is a story of a cop who investigates the murder of an old-time friend and uncovers a web of corruption revolving around the development of a casino in the city.

In the film, Tae-su (played by Jeong Doo-hong) is a detective in Seoul and visits his hometown for the first time in decades for the funeral of his childhood friend Wang-jae. At the funeral he meets his other old friends Pil-ho (Lee Beom-soo), Seok-hwan (Ryoo) and Dong-hwan.

Believing there was more to Wang-jae's sudden death, Tae-su delays his return to Seoul and decides to stay in his hometown longer. Investigating Wang-jae's acquaintances, Tae-su is attacked by thugs and narrowly escapes death with the help of his friend Seok-hwan.

New line of HD-shot action films planned

Production company Nabi Pictures and the Seoul Action School are teaming up to launch a new "brand" of low-budget action pics shot on HD.

The films will be targeted at both domestic and international audiences, given worldwide interest in the Asian action genre, and will be budgeted at 1 billion won ($1.1 million) each. CJ Entertainment will participate as the investor and international sales agent for the films.

Director KIM Seong-soo, who directed the action films Beat (1997) and Musa (2001) will oversee the project together with Korea's best-known martial arts choreographer JEONG Doo-hong. They are expected to put five projects into development by the end of the year.

The new brand also aims to be a launchpad for young directorial talent. The two companies have entered into a relationship with the recently-wrapped Mise-en-Scene Genres Film Festival to find talented new directors. In addition, JEONG himself will make his directorial debut in one of the films.
