'Santamaria' overly emotional, mawkish

How many films can a Korean director put out every year? When the industry is booming, the optimal number might be one, maybe more if they are lucky. When business is sluggish, the number is bound to shrink, and so far 2008 has been a bad year for most Korean filmmakers.

Director Jeong Yeong-bae has defied the conventional wisdom dramatically. At a time when releasing even one film is regarded as an admirable feat, he is now set to introduce his second film - "Santamaria" (Jalmot-doen man-nam) - in less than two months after the release of his debut feature, "Cherry Tomato", in May.

It is all the more surprising when you consider that "Santamaria", to be released July 10, is not the best candidate for a box-office jackpot. The movie focuses on how two men cope with an emotionally taxing mixture of mistrust, hatred and resentment, even though they were best friends when they were young.

Actor Jeong Joon-ho said, "We're meeting with good intentions".

He revealed this on the 28th at the closing party for MBC "Last Scandal".

He said, "I am at the age to get married. So if I do get married, I don't want to hide it. But I was confused when an unexpected article came out. I don't think it's respectful to fans either".

"It is true that I have good intentions, and I will try to see good results. To be honest, it'll be hard if this year passes. So I'm trying hard to make it work".

"Last Scandal" hits its highest ratings (19.2%) in its 4th week on air

Choi Jin-sil, Jeong Joon-ho, and Jeong Woong-in star together in "Last Scandal", a romantic comedy and special MBC weekend TV drama (Scriptwriter: Moon Hee-jeong, Director: Lee Tae-gon-I). The show reached its highest viewership rating of 19.2% in its 4th week on the air (TNS).

The first episode of "Last Scandal" garnered a viewership rating of 19.2% and every week, its ratings have rise by 1 to 2 percent, which is a solid performance considering that it is competing against dramas on other networks that premiered earlier than "Last Scandal.

The growing popularity of "Last Scandal" in the last four weeks was made possible by the brilliant acting performances given by Choi Jin-sil and Jeong Joon-ho along with an excellent script written by Moon Hee-jeong, whose previous works include "The Daring Sisters". "Last Scandal": A New Drama of Strong Spirited Ajumma

Dramas have always been the center of attention among Koreans with their cheerful characters played by young, hip and stylish celebrities. This year, the fever will go on, but this time it will be led by none other than "ajumma".

"Ajumma" is a Korean term that refers to middle-aged women who are married and usually represented as strong, fearless and dependable.

Two television networks have already aired dramas depicting the lives of these women: MBC's "A Beauty's Unmatched, Park Jeong-geum", and SBS's "First Wives Club".

Now, Korean fans will welcome another drama full of romance, humor and humanity, all conjoined into the life of a normal, but courageous "ajumma".

'Magicians' Plays Tricks on Audience

You can say that a movie is a genre that people have created to overcome the limitations that a theatrical play has _ mainly of time and space.

But "The Magicians", filmed with one, long tracking shot, develops such limitations into its own "tricks" to tell a story of love and friendship.

The result is that you feel as if you were watching a 90-minute play yet with more of an intimate feeling for the characters as the camera tracks down the detailed change in their emotions.

Directed by Song Il-gon, the film revolves around the members of a music band, who gather at a bar to commemorate their late guitarist. It's been exactly three years since the band, named Magician, broke up after their friend died.
