The drama market of 2007 had been flooded with a large number of high-quality dramas, range from large-scaled dramas of billion dollars worth production cost to much smaller-scaled, but of rich content dramas. Among these great ranges of dramas, the TV viewers had been laughing with character's happiness, crying over their heart-broken love story and were raged with unrealistic settings. The institution of the family has long been protected and justified in Korea and elsewhere. But the time-honored system is struggling to survive. A common thread, namely the sugarcoated idea (or ideal) of happy family members living together, is disappearing fast. It's time to say goodbye to the glorious family-oriented era. Or is it?
"Shim's Family", directed by Jeong Yoon-cheol, suggests there are indeed many disheartening developments that deal a lethal, if not final, blow to the family system in Korea. It's interesting to compare how Korean and English dictionaries define the word "family". While the former defines "family" as a group of people related to each other through marriage, in the latter (there can be exceptions, mind you) the "marriage" part is gone.
Though not widely accepted as "proper" yet, more and more people form families without marriage in this country as well. Maybe the time is not far off when Korean dictionaries will revise the definition.
What is it, then, that turns a group of people into a family, if not by marriage or blood relations? It is the kind of question the new film "Family Ties" ("The Birth of a Family") asks its audience, to which it also gives its own answer.
