Leading Film Score Composer Honored with CD Collection

JO Seong-woo is a leading film music composer in Korea and a selection of his work is released on CD under the title: JO Seong-woo: Best of Cinema Music. The selected scores are from 23 films.

The composer is president of the company Music & Film Creation (M&F Creation) and specializes in composing film scores. He studied philosophy at the Yonsei university.

His friendship with director HEO Jin-ho ("Christmas in August", 1998) resulted in the collaboration on "One Fine Spring Day" (2001) and "April Snow" (2005). He also composed for films like: "Nowhere to Hide" (1999) by LEE Myeong-se and "Take Care of My Cat" (2001) by JEONG Jae-eun.

'Ennio Morricone of Korea' spotlighted with his best album

Can you imagine the film "Cinema Paradiso" without Ennio Morricone's score masterfully capturing the gentle-natured, nostalgic feel of the film? Music's influence on moviegoers' attitude toward a film is far greater than one might think, yet few attribute a film's success to it in Korea.

This could be why there are few composers dedicated fully to original film scores in the country, but at least the film industry has one outstanding film music composer worthy of being proud of: Jo Seong-woo, president of M&F (Music & Film) Creation.

"A talented composer can't necessarily be a good film composer because it takes a deep insight into filmmaking", Jo said in an interview with The Korea Herald.

This Thursday, a CD collection of his film scores containing a total of 32 pieces of music highlighting 23 different films will come out. Musical 'Great Janggeum' unveiled

The major hit MBC drama "Dae jang geum", which received an explosive reaction from viewers throughout Asia, will be made into a musical. Titled "The Great Jangguem", a musical version of the TV drama will entertain theatergoers at the Seoul Arts Center from May 26 to June 16.

On Monday, MBC, one of Korea's three major broadcasters, and its joint production partner PMC Production held a showcase for the press at a hotel in Seoul, unveiling five songs from the much anticipated domestic production.

The musical adaptation of a period TV drama has received attention from media since last year, raising speculation of whether the musical will be as successful as the drama.

The TV drama "Dae jang geum" was phenomenally successful in 2003, garnering an average of 50 percent of Korean viewers.

The 54-episode drama also made a huge contribution to spreading Hallyu, or Korean Wave, as it was exported to over 50 countries around the world.
