The Korean musical market is literally witnessing a "big bang" this summer.
Korean musical-goers will have a rare opportunity this summer to enjoy both critically-acclaimed and commercially successful Broadway musicals such as "Man of La Mancha", "Cats", "Chicago", "Gambler", "Hedwig", and "Thrill Me". We enlisted musical critics to offer their evaluations of the musicals based on five criteria –entertainment, music, cast, stage, and story.
Cats
"Cats" feeds the audience's eyes with splendid dances and extraordinary stage settings. Since May, the Broadway world tour team has been performing here in Seoul and the Korean team will launch its first licensed performance in September. It received low marks for the story, but high marks for entertainment. Musical critic Won Jong-won said, "The attraction of Cats is the performers' facial expressions and detailed body movements which make audiences feel as though they are looking at real cats. Follow every movement of the performers,...| More

Those from the producing company said, "The actors including Kim Ji-hyeon saw the script and decided to participate with no salary out of their pure hearts rather than commercial profit".

Just two decades ago, it was rare for movie fans to see actresses do nude scenes because of strict censorship and most stars were hesitant about undressing for the camera.
But as the domestic moviemaking trend took an innovative turn towards liberal expression, nude scenes no longer made much news. And interestingly, baring all turned into an effective strategy for actresses to prove their acting skills, commitment and passion for acting.
"I think of nude scenes as a crucial passage to become a real actress", said actress Eom Ji-won after shooting director Hong Sang-soo's "Tale of Cinema". "After stripping in front of the camera, I felt that I could now take any role".
Even veteran actresses with over 10 years experience have chosen to shoot nude scenes to reach a higher level of acting.
Top actresses Jeon Do-yeon and Kim Hye-soo each gained new perspectives in "Happy End" and "Hypnotized", respectively.
But despite the changes, differing views on nudity often cause conf...| More

Like looking at a photograph of an ex-lover years after the relationship has ended, "Summer Time" (2001), director Park Jae-ho's controversial erotic drama, possesses the power to arouse on many different levels. At the film's core are the issues of voyeurism, politics and unadulterated desire; a mesmerizing combination that makes for compulsive viewing.
With a narrative running from the present back to the dark days of the Gwangju massacre - when political unrest and social upheaval dominated the Korean landscape - this is an intriguing examination of human relationships, especially ones that are firmly in the grips of one or more of the Seven Deadly Sins.
In a small town somewhere in rural Korea, the beautiful Hee-ran spends her days at home behind a padlocked door that only husband Tae-yeol has the key to. Sang-ho, a handsome student activist, moves into the room above, discovers a hole or three in the floorboards and begins spying on the couple. Before long, he is an earnest...| More
