Rotterdam fest to highlight various Korean films

The 37th International Film Festival Rotterdam, scheduled to run from January 23 to February 3, will present a broad selection of Korean films in its line-up.

Although no Korean films will compete in the festival's main competition section for first and second films, the short film Waiting will participate in the festival's short film competition. The film, which was commissioned by the Jeonju International Film Festival as part of its Short! Short! Short! project, centers on a woman waiting for a train who encounters a boy who acts in strange ways. This marks the second year in the row that the film's director, KIM Jong-kwan, has had a short film competing at Rotterdam.

Three Korean features will screen in the Sturm und Drang (Cinema of the Future) section. The omnibus "Fantastic Parasuicides" centers on people who undergo surreal experiences at the moment they decide to kill themselves. "Let's Finish" will start independent film event

The 32nd annual Seoul Independent Film Festival (SIFF) opens this week, once again introducing artistic and experimental films by directors from Korea and Asia. The aim has always been to spotlight both amateur and professional works that do not follow current filmmaking conventions, introducing new approaches to technique and plot.
The festival first started in 1975 under the title, Korean Youth Film Festival. The scale of the festival was limited at the time, with an emphasis on handing out honorary awards instead of screening films, and showcasing mostly student works. With the founding of the Korean Film Council in 1999, the festival started its own executive committee and broadened its horizons to include a more diverse range of films. In this comic satire, a corrupt detective named Chung-su (Lee Moon-sik) is on ambush duty on a remote island called "Mapado" off a southern port of South Korea along with macho man Jae-chul (Lee Jeong-jin), in search of a woman who has concealed her whereabouts after hiding 16 billion won _ prize money from a lottery originally won by Jae-cheol's boss. To their surprise, the island is inhabited by five strong-willed grandmothers who share all production, distribution, labor and possessions together on an equal basis. Brief History of Independent Films Screened in Seoul

Representative works by 10 local independent filmmakers will be screened with English subtitles from Friday to July 12 at Seoul Arts Cinema.

The event, titled "Yesterday and Today (Ojewa Onol)", will show a total of 20 films in five days and also offer sessions in which directors talk about their works along with film critics and audiences at a cafe in the theater on July 11.

During the event, each director will introduce their two films, one from their early works and the most recent one.

It will be a good opportunity to see how each filmmaker's works have changed over the years and to check out how the trends of independent films have changed, organizers said.

The 10 directors include Choi Jin-seong, Kim Jong-kwan, Yoon Seong-ho, Park Chan-ok and Chegy.

Choi made a debut with a documentary film, which dealt with social problems and issues, but he has recently made a fiction film with touches of fantasy music.
