"Family Ties" ("The Birth of a Family") Wins Top Prize at Home

The nation's oldest film awards ceremony, the Grand Bell Awards, gave its top prize to low-key hybrid-family-drama "Family Ties" ("The Birth of a Family") , directed by KIM Tae-yong. The film, which has toured a number of international film festivals winning the top prize at the International Thessaloniki Film Festival in Greece, also picked up a Grand Bell Best Screenplay award. The win was a happy surprise after many expected last summer's
blockbuster The Host to take top honors. "The Host" did however snatch up a Best Director award for BONG Joon-ho and Best Editing for KIM Sun-min.

Actress KIM Ah-Joong, whose fame is spreading like wildfire across south-east Asia, picked up the Best Actress award for her lead in the cutting-comedy "200 Pounds Beauty". Korea Wins Six at Asia Pacific Film Fest

South Korean films won the majority of the awards at the 51st Asia Pacific Film Festival which concluded November 25th in Taipei after a four day run. All-time record holder "The Host" did extremely well, winning three awards: Best Editing for KIM Sun-min, Best Sound for CHOI Tae-yeong, and Best Supporting Actor for BYEON Hee-bong.

Both Best Actor and Actress awards were won by South Koreans. Child actor LEE Jae-eung took the Best Actor award for his central role in "Bravo, My Life" ("Mommy, Dearest"). Actress SON Ye-jin picked up an award for her lead role in melodrama "April Snow" by director HEO Jin-ho.

Finally, director SEON Ji-yeon took the Best Short Film award for Atomic Punch, My Darling. A seven-member jury headed by Taiwanese director Hsing Lee judged the films.

The purpose of the festival is to promote the regional film industry and strengthen ties in the Asia-Pacific filmmaking community.

Short Film Fest to Screen Works via Web Site

Fifteen short films that won prizes at the 4th Mise-enscene's Genres Film Festival will be screened at the event's Web page, http://www.mgff.org , free of charge for 15 days from Aug.1, the organizer said.

The films include "Garivegas" by Kim Sun-min, "Getting Married to a Vietnamese Girl" by Lee Mirang, "My Really Big Mike" by Woo Sun-ho, "The Perfect Fishplate" by Na Hongjin and "Save My Earth" by Kim Bejay, which won the grand prix of each of five sections.

The annual festival, which is held every June in Seoul, presents Korean short films under the slogan of "Beyond the Barrier of Genres" and aims to support and promote talented young filmmakers. ...| More
