Like Hou Hsiao-hsien's eloquent "City of Sadness" which dramatized the February 28th (1947) massacre in Taiwan, "Peppermint Candy" brings to light the Kwangju massacre of 1980 in which massive student-led demonstrations in Kwangju, South Korea protesting the imposition of martial law resulted in the death of hundreds and possibly thousands of people.
