Producer on Long Gestation of N.Korean Refugee Film

A film depicting the misery faced by North Korean defectors struck a chord with the audience gathered for a screening at the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. last month. Scheduled for release on June 5 here in Korea, the movie starring actor Cha In-pyo is produced by Patrick Cheh, the Korean-American president of Unity Media, who gave a presentation about the film's genesis at the event.

In an interview with the Chosun Ilbo, Cheh said he wanted to show the reality of North Korean refugees. Perseverance, he says, allowed the work to be completed although there is little hope of box-office success. "The movie criticizes the North Korean reality, that its regime violates the clear proposition that the family should live together, and breaks it down when it even fails to meet the basic need for clothes, food and shelter for its people", he said.

Lee Yoo-jin, "I have a boyfriend, whom I dated for 3 months"

Lee Yoo-jin, who made 3 years gap in showbiz after confessing she is of mixed blood, made a surprise announcement about her boyfriend. After making her comeback as a host in ETN "Manuel on Male Minds", she appeared in "Park Chul Show" on 11th and revealed, "I have a boyfriend, whom I dated for 3 months".

About her boyfriend, Lee Yoo-jin said, "He is the 1978-er business person whose firm life philosophy and simple living pattern made a good impression on me when we first met. We are happy to be a company of each other's presence". In addition she said, "My boyfriend hardly spends much time watching TV. He didn't know I was an actor when we first met".

Moreover, the spokesman from "Park Chul Show" said, "Lee Yoo-jin was honest about her painful past 3 years talking about the prejudice against her mixed origin and misunderstanding about drunken assault she was claimed to commit".

43rd Crowns King and the Clown

The 43rd annual Grand Bell Awards ceremony, held July 21st at the COEX Convention Hall in southern Seoul, presented its top prize for Best Film to The King and the Clown as indeed almost everyone expected. The film grew into a colossal local hit when it was released in December of last year, attracting more than 12.3 million movie-goers to become the highest-grossing Korean film of all time. It was nominated in a record 15 categories, and took home seven awards, including Best Director, Best Actor and Supporting Actor, Best Cinematography, and Best Script.

Kam Woo-seong won the Best Actor award for his lead role as Jang-saeng, an itinerant jester who ends up performing, along with his counter-part Konggil, for a slightly demented King in this Joseon-period-drama. KARM, 36, debuted in television in 1990 with the drama A Paradise of Our Own and made his film debut as the lead in Marriage is a Crazy Thing opposite UHM Jung-hwa.
