New York Korean Film Festival this August

The seventh edition of the New York Korean Film Festival is set to run August 22 – 31. Sponsored by KOFIC and The Korea Society, the event will screen more than 15 recent Korean features, of which 14 have been finalized for the line-up.

Highlights include one of the top-grossing Korean films of 2008, "Forever the Moment", a sports-redemption-themed film directed by LIM Soon-rye and starring MOON So-ri and KIM Jeong-eun. Other 2008 releases in the line-up are "Hellcats" by KWON Chil-in, "Once Upon a Time" by JEONG Yong-ki, "Open City" by LEE Sang-gi, "Spare" by LEE Seong-han, and the Korea-Japanese co-production "Virgin Snow" starring LEE Joon-ki and Aoi Miyazaki.

Films in the program from 2007 include such high-profile films as the Chosun-set popular tale, "Hwangjin-y - Movie - 2007", starring SONG Hye-kyo, the Kwang-ju-set historical tragedy, May 18th, a Chosun-set tale of high stakes cooking, "Le Grand Chef", and Daniel Henney vehicle and tear-jerker, "My Father".

Celebrities Attend Anti-U. S. Beef Rally

Acclaimed actress Moon So-ri and famed singers Yang Hee-eun and Ahn Chi-hwan took part in Tuesday's massive rally against the import of U.S. beef. Citizens at the candlelight vigil greeted them with loud cheers and warm applause.

Moon, who came to the rally with her husband Jang Joon-hwan, director of "Save the Green Planet", encouraged the crowd by saying that many more in the film industry are watching and supporting the civic demonstration. She was cheered on by the crowd when she urged the Lee Myung-bak administration to listen to the people and accept public opinion.

Singer Ahn Chi-hwan, who has already attended many rounds of candlelight vigils, sang his songs "In the Wild Plain" and "Freedom", as well as "The Will", written just for the candlelight protest. Once known for her anti-establishment songs, noted singer Yang Hee-eun sang her greatest hit "Morning Dew" with the protestors.

Hallyu star Bae Yong-joon attended the 'The Legend Premium Event'

Hallyu star Bae Yong-joon attended the "'The Legend' Premium Event" held at the Kyocera Dome in Osaka on the first of June at 2 in the afternoon, and met 40 thousand fans in three years.

The recent event was a promotion event for the MBC drama 'The Legend' which will be aired in NHK, and actors such as Bae Yong-joon as well as Moon So-ri, Lee Ji-ah, Oh Kwang-rok, Lee Philip and producers such as director Kim Jong-hak participated in the event and talked about the behind stories of the drama. Bae Yongjoon went up on stage with other actors who were dressed in clothes of their roles in the drama.

This day, fans who gathered around the Osaka dome since 8 in the morning formed an endless queue. There were also approximately 100 Japanese reporters, proving the popularity of the drama.

After the event, Bae Yong-joon is planning to go to Tokyo and participate in the official press conference of 'The Legend' held by NHK and film for a special episode of the drama.

'The Legend' Promo Event to be Telecast in Japan

A promotional event to publicize 'The Legend', a Korean drama series starring actor Bae Yong-joon, will be broadcast live via satellite in a number of movie theaters across Japan.

Bae's management agency BOF said the '2008 Taewangsasingi Premium Event', which will be held at the Kyosera Dome in Osaka on June 1, will be screened in 13 movie theaters via live satellite telecast and that the event will be watched by an estimated 40,000 Japanese viewers.

BOF said the satellite telecast was organized for fans who could not procure tickets to attend the promotional event. Tickets were sold out 18 minutes after ticket sales began on May 25. According to reports, the 80-dollar tickets were also sold on online auction sites for large sums of money.

Tickets sales for the movie theater telecast began on May 23 at http://www.cnplayguide.com.

The much-anticipated event will be attended by Bae, producer Kim Jong-hak, Lee Ji-ah, Moon So-ri, Park Seong-woong, Lee Philip and Oh Kwang-rok.

Cast of "The Legend" to Appear on Japan's NHK TV

Stars of "The Legend", high-rating historical drama about King Gwanggaeto of Goguryeo Kingdom, are invited to appear on a special program for Japan's premier broadcasting station NHK. Bae Yong-joon, Lee Ji-ah, Moon So-ri, and director Kim Jong-hak will talk about the drama and its making on an hour-long show. Bae played the leading role of Gwanggaeto and Lee and Moon the parts of his love interests. They are scheduled to be in Japan for the "2008 The Legend Premium Event" slated for June 1st in Kyocera Dome in Osaka first, and then fly to Tokyo for the taping of the show.

It is very rare for NHK to slot in a show for the main cast members of a foreign drama. Japanese media insiders say that the special programming indicates the high expectations for and popularity of Bae Yong-joon in Japan. The actor has gained a huge following in Japan for his role in "Winter Sonata", the first Korean drama to win explosive responses in Japan and initiate Hallyu, the Korean pop culture wave.
