Various origins of female stars… 'Miss Korea' group falters

On a breezy spring day in March 2008, the entertainment investigation team of Sports Khan sensed an emergency. The argument between female stars about their influence has become fierce, almost to the point of battle. Accordingly, under the supervision of Detective Choi, the entertainment investigation team had a briefing on the 'Map of Various Powerful Female Stars'. A record of the questions and answers from the briefing are provided.

Detective Choi: As you all know, we've gathered here to discuss the toppling balance of the influence of top female celebrities. Firstly, the 'super model' group has almost taken over the 'Miss Korea' group and has become the 'big sister' of the entertainment industry. Also, the new 'internet beauty' group is extended its boundaries. Contrary to these changes, the 'horror story' group is still steadily on the top.

Ajumma now depicted as smart, strong, cool

Call it ajumma power.
Ajumma is Korean for middle-aged women, and ajumma characters are currently in full control of the screen ― both television and film.
But they are no longer portrayed as aggressive or hot-tempered, for example, as a woman dashing for a vacant seat in the subway or elbowing other ajumma for the last grocery item on sale. They no longer wear loose floral-print pants or sport curly hair.
Their aggressiveness is presented rather as an endearing trait ― as enthusiasm for life and full tolerance of others.
Jung-geum (played by Bae Jong-ok) from MBC TV's "Park Jung-geum, Heavenly Beauty" is one example.
Jung-geum is a 38-year-old detective in charge of investigating violent crimes and a single mom living with a child. Her divorce transformed her into an uncompromising, tough woman.

Feisty TV mom clobbers husband for cheating

The stereotype of a Korean ajumma, or housewife, is a stocky woman with a tight perm wearing loose pants and a bubble-patterned kerchief around her neck.
And most seem to deploy sharp elbows on the subway.
So it's a bit of a surprise that the Kim Hye-seon, 38, has transformed herself into such an ajumma in SBS TV's weekend drama, "First Wives' Club" (2007).
Kim plays Han Bok-soo ― which means revenge in Korean ― one of the toughest matrons around.
Bok-soo is loud and assertive. She takes on her husband when she finds out he's having an affair with Jung Na-mi (Byeong Jeong-min), his secret girlfriend.
Bok-soo feels even more betrayed because she has spent her whole married life selling fish at the market to support her husband, who wants to become a doctor.
In previous dramas like "Lotus Flower Fairy" (2004) and "Famous Princesses" (2006), Kim was a good-tempered shaman and a homely housewife, respectively.

As the year 2007 ended, the dramas are also changing its path. On 26th, SBS Wed-Thur drama, "Lobbyist" was finished, followed by KBS 2 "In-Soon is Pretty" on 27th. Previously, KBS1 historical drama, "Dae Jo Young" was crowned with perfection on 23rd. The following is the summary of popularity rating of dramas in 2007 (data provided by TNS Media Korea), beginning with MBC serial drama "Bad woman, Good woman" which began on 1st January 2007.

Troubled Oh Hyeon-kyeong 'Headed for Stability'

Oh Hyeon-kyeong finds herself in the spotlight again. The ill-fated actress, who after winning the Miss Korea crown in 1989 made the jump into acting but was tripped up by an old video of her and her boyfriend having sex, is now making headlines with her divorce from her jailed husband. She seemed finally to settle down when she tied the knot in 2002 with Kemongsa president Hong Seung-pyo and gave birth to a daughter in 2003. But in June, she divorced her husband, who is in prison for corruption.

In an interview with the Sports Chosun, a sister publication of the Chosun Ilbo, she seemed confident that the worst is behind her and she is "headed for a more stable life". Oh has had her share of troubles, but she says that the people around her have become her strength. She confides she abandoned all hope that someone would come to her aid and learned to rely on herself, but in the end it was others who helped heal her wounds.
