'Koreanovelas' Fever is sweeping the Philippines

In the last few years, Korean films, TV dramas and pop music have become immensely popular abroad, a phenomenon known as the Korean Wave. This is the second in a series of essays by a select group of foreign scholars and journalists looking at the spread of Korean pop culture in Southeast Asian countries and beyond. - Ed.

The names Johnny, Jenny and Andrew may not ring a bell for Koreans, but for Filipinos, they started the so-called Korean Wave in the Philippines. They were the "Filipinized" names of the main characters in the drama "Autumn in My Heart", better known as "Endless Love 1" when it was shown in the Philippines. It was the first-ever Korean drama to air in the country.

DVDs of Bae, Seo Bestsellers in Japan

As Korean actor Bae Yong-joon's popularity continues unabated in Japan, heartthrob Seo Do-yeong is now helping fuel the Hallyu fever in the country.

In DVD sales released by Fuji TV Thursday, Bae's DVD topped overall weekly sales followed by a DVD released by Seo, the protagonist of the last of producer Yoon Seok-ho's season-themed drama series, "Spring Waltz".

Bae's DVD covered his appearance at the Hallyu expo on Jeju Island and interview excerpts. The top sales testify to his consistent popularity following his hit drama "Winter Sonata".

Seo's DVD, capturing his daily life, is climbing the sales chart since its release on July 25.

A new map and bus tour highlight hallyu's best loved locations

In a way the idea of visiting the sets of famous soap operas seems as childish as sticking a hand in the handprints of celebrities on the walls of Planet Hollywood.
But in the minds of urban slackers, the idea of mimicking characters from their favorite shows creates the guilty pleasure of living an actor's lifestyle for nothing.
And let's face it. It happens everywhere.
Look at "Sex and the City" and the impact it had on the Manolo Blahnik shoe company when Carrie, the main character, obsessed over their 500-dollar heels.
The Louis K. Meisel Gallery, where Charlotte worked and hundreds of restaurants, bars and shops that were featured in the show all became must-see destinations for the show's audiences, many of whom who had never been to the Big Apple before.

Korean Drama Hall "Four Season House" Opens

The city of Seoul opens the Korean drama hall named "Four Season House" today.

A joint project of the Seoul government and the production company Yoon's Color, the "Four Season House" utilizes the sets of TV drama "Spring Waltz" to display the photos and props from the popular Korean dramas.

It will also house the office of director Yoon Seok-ho, who produced the Four Seasons series ("Spring Waltz", "Summer Scent", "Autumn Tale" ("Autumn in my Heart"), and "Winter Sonata"), the most popular Korean dramas overseas.

The "Four Season House" will be opened from 10AM to 5PM on weekdays and from 10AM to 3PM on Saturdays, and closed on Sundays and holidays. On Saturday evenings the House will be open to reserved guests for small concerts and meetings with the casts of the Four Season dramas.

The opening ceremony is to be attended by the leading actors and actresses of "Summer Scent" and "Spring Waltz", Seoul government and KBS officials, as well as 300 Korean and Japanese fans....| More

The Korean Entertainment Industry Society selected Jang Dong-gun, Bae Yong-joon, and 21 others to be awarded at the first Hallyu Awards.

In the star category, Jang Dong-gun and Jeon Ji-Hyeon (movie), Bae Yong-joon and Lee Young-Ae (drama), "Rain" and BoA (music), Kim Nam Cheol (game) and others were awarded.

In the production planning category, Director Bong Joon-Ho (movie), Production Director Yoon Seok-Ho (drama), SM Entertainment CEO Lee Soo-Man (music), NCSoft CEO Kim Taek Jin (game) were selected while Kim Kwang Soo of Mnet Media (drama), JYP Entertainment CEO Park Jin Young (music), Nexon CEO Kwon Joon Mo (game) were awarded under the marketing category.

Also, in the corporation category, SidusHQ CEO Jeong Hoon-Tak and CJ Entertainment CEO Kim Joo-Sung (movie), CEO Kim Jong Hak of Kim Jong-Hak Productions (drama), SM Entertainment CEO Lee Soo Man (music), and Webzen CEO Kim Nam Joo (game) were awarded.
