Movie-Based Dramas to Fill TV Screens

Staff Reporter
Amid the ongoing search for catchy, stylish, attractive ideas for local dramas, many drama-makers have turned to themes that have already been seen to be popular. Movie-based dramas are no longer new, but the race for the best-made remake is expected to get more competitive with "IRIS", "Tazza" (working title), "Friends: The Unfinished Tale" (working title) and "Beat".
The 1999 movie "Shiri" was a steppingstone for Korean cinema, being considered the first blockbuster movie that captivated local movie fans with its distinctive plot and action scenes. Now the hit movie that depicted the lives of secret agents is coming back to television screens as "IRIS". In order to bring movie-like elements onto the smaller screen, the drama will be written and produced by Taewon Entertainment and Kang Je-gyu Film, both famous movie agencies here, and will boast a budget of 20 billion won. Korean heartthrob Lee Byeong-heon ("All In", 2003) will appear as the myst...|

'Sikgaek' sets off on new culinary journey

The comic-book series was a hit. The movie version topped national charts. Will the "Sikgaek" drama get high viewer ratings?
Set to air this Tuesday night on SBS, this 24-episode drama is based on Heo Yeong-man's bestselling comic series of the same name. While the film version of the series, titled "Le Grand Chef", topped national charts last year, that doesn't guarantee the upcoming drama a free ride to the top.
With SBS melodramas "All In" (2003) and "Love Story in Harvard" (2004-2005) screenwriter Choi Wan-gyoo orchestrating the plot of the TV version, what originally started out as a soulful exploration of the regional flavors of Korean cuisine in Heo Yeong-man's series may morph into a sappy and highly dramatic romance on the small screen.
Judging from the 40-minute preview screening last week, SBS' "Sikgaek" promises to bring classic drama-making elements to audiences nationwide. Rivalry, love triangles and heritage all factor into this miniseries. Glossy shots of Korea...|

Actress Park Sol-mi of the "All In" fame will return to TV screen for her first acting role in three years. She is to star in weekend drama series "My Woman" due to air in July. She will play a talented and multilingual career woman named Sera. The main character Sera is an ambitious woman, who betrays her long-time boyfriend in order to attain the riches and enter high society.
Park's last regular appearance on TV was in KBS drama "Golden Apple" in 2005. Since then she has starred in the 2007 film "Paradise 1986" opposite Park Hae-il. She said that it took her a long time to come back to TV, because she took care to select a role that fit her best. Park thanked her fans for waiting patiently during the hiatus and added that the character Sera was very appealing, because Sera has both the bright and dark sides to her personality.
"My Woman" is a remake of "Terminal", a high-rating drama during the 1980s. The new version will be written by Lee Hee-woo and Seon Kyeong-hee and direc...|

Staff Reporter
The world's premier film event, Festival de Cannes, will open for the 61st time May 14-25 in the southern French port city. While there are no Korean entrees this year in the main competition section, five films ― including the world premiere of the anticipated blockbuster "The Good, the Bad, the Weird" ― will shine in other sections of the festival.
"The Good, the Bad, the Weird", directed by Kim Ji-woon, will be shown in the Out of Competition section. This "oriental Western" features exciting horseback races and train rides in vast Mongolian plains.
It stars three of the hottest Korean actors ― hallyu star Lee Byeong-heon (TV soap "All In"), heartbreaker Jeong Woo-seong ("Daisy") and bona fide actor Song Kang-ho ("Secret Sunshine").
The film will receive its own gala event, complete with a red carpet event. It is anticipated to be a big highlight along with the premiere of films like Woody Allen's "Vicky Christina Barcelon...|
