Two Korean movie production outfits choose the busy streets of Manila and beach of Boracay ..

MANILA- Two Korean movie production outfits have chosen the busy streets of Manila, the pristine beaches of Boracay Island in Aklan and the scenic Pagsanjan Falls in Laguna to serve as backdrops for the romantic comedy they are filming here, Department of Tourism secretary Joseph Ace Durano has announced.

The crew of DRM Entertainment Co. Ltd. and Story Factory, producers of the romantic comedy "Feel So Good", has been at work in the country since Jan. 9, Durano told Korean and Filipino entertainment writers in a press conference last week. Shooting wraps up on Feb. 23, he added.


For this particular production, the DOT is helping the Korean group obtain permits and other logistical requirements for the location shoots. It is also tapping local talent for additional assistance, said Durano.

Actress Kim Hye-soo Denies Rumors

Actress Kim Hye-soo, 38, denied rumors concerning her relationships.

SidusHQ, Kim's agency, officially rejected rumors of Kim having relationships with a yakuza boss or trot singer Na Hoon-a on Thursday.

Kim is a popular actress who starred in the movies "A Good Day to Have an Affair" and "Eleventh Mom" last year. She won the Best Actress award at Blue Dragon Awards for her role in "Tazza: The High Rollers" ("The War of Flower") in 2006.

Na, 61, is a renowned trot singer who began his singing career in 1960s. He starred in movies in the 1980s and released many hit songs. But he disappeared after canceling a concert March 2007.

Rumor has it that Kim is the mistress of a yakuza boss in Korea and entered into an illicit relationship with Na, which resulted in the yakuzas harming Na.

The rumor spread like a wildfire through the Internet. Kim believed the rumor has damaged her reputation and decided to deny the misunderstandings.

Actresses Gain Presence Onscreen

While the female persona Korean entertainment remains largely reminiscent of Hollywood during the 1950~60s, a few in recently released or upcoming films are beginning to reflect, with some realism, Korean women today.

Women onscreen tend to be either innocent asexual Audrey Hepburns (think Lee Young-ae, Choi Ji-woo, Song Hye-kyo) or smoldering Marylin Monroes oozing with sex appeal (Kim Hye-soo, Uhm Jung-hwa). Then there exists a third, very minor group of eccentrics like Katherine Hepburn that fit into neither category, like actresses Kang Hye-jeong, Bae Doona and Kong Hyo-jin.

In other words, it is rather difficult to meet truly realistic female characters in movies. A most disappointing example is director Kwak Gyeong-taek's latest offering "A Love". Korean movies falter in first half of 2007

In the first half of this year, the combined share of Korean films fell to 47.3 percent, marking the lowest level since 2001. The continued drop in market share, partly prompted by the relatively stronger performance of Hollywood blockbusters, is now sounding alarms in the domestic film industry.

According to CGV, a major film distributor, the dominance of Korean films reached a peak in 2004 when they carved out a 66.8 percent share, outsmarting Hollywood competitors by a wide margin. The share, however, dropped to 55.8 percent in 2005 before slightly gaining ground to 59.5 percent last year.

But the share in the first half of this year showed a pronounced weakness, raising concerns about whether the Korean film industry could defend its share. The negative development came after Korean movies had witnessed an impressive growth in the early 2000s, fueled by the Korean Wave that helped spread Korean movies, dramas and music across Asia.
