Park Yong-woo gives it all in a convoluted thriller

Kyu Hyun Kim (qhyunkim)

Well, here is another Korean movie that you suspect that the title (the Korean-language moniker, too, is the English phrase "Beautiful Sunday") was meant to be heavily ironic, given that it involves a police detective who gradually sinks into the cesspool of corruption and moral confusion in order to pay medical bills for his comatose wife, and an uber-creep who rapes a woman and then marries her later, hiding his true identity. "Beautiful Sunday", indeed.

Detective Kang (Park Yong-woo, "My Scary Girl", "Blood Rain") is making deals with scumbag drug lords, marked for death by his arch-enemy Sang-tae (Kim Dong-ha), falling asleep at a stakeout, and otherwise unraveling at the seams. His colleagues openly question his motives, and the sympathetic department chief can do only so much for him. In a separate stand of...| More

A robust, grisly horror film boosted by excellent performances

Kyu Hyun Kim (qhyunkim)

A meek but kind insurance salesman Jeon Jun-O (Hwang Jeong-Min, "Happiness") is handpicked by a creepy metalworker, Park Choong-Bae (Kang Shin-Il, "Silmido"), for renewal of the policies on the his family. Visiting Park's spectacularly decrepit adobe, Jun-O ends up discovering the body of Park's young son, apparently a suicide.

Meeting Choong-Bae's wife Yi-Hwa (Yoo Seon, "The Wig" - "Scary Hair"), a pale beauty who has seemingly exhausted her capacity for grief, Jun-O begins to suspect that the boy's death was in fact a murder, and that she is next in line.

What Jun-O does not understand is that his small act of kindness (and breach of professional ethics) over a phone consultation has already ensnared him in a web of deceit, mutilation and murder, spun by a psychopath who makes Norman Bates in "Psycho" look like SpongeBob SquarePants.

A Japan-Korea coproduction, "Black House" is base...| More

A game of exchanging bodies… If you are given one chance to bring this fantasy into a reality, which celebrity is at the top of your list? Upon this interesting survey, singer Lee Hyo-lee and "Rain" topped each gender category by overwhelming number of votes.

The survey was conducted from 21st January for a week for an advertising purpose for upcoming film "The Devil's Game". The film is about two men who snatch and get snatched each other's body by a bet.

The unique theme of "body plunder" in the film "The Devil's Game" is becoming a sensational hit. The survey was targeted to Netizens where top Korean stars including "Rain" & Lee Hyo-lee, Kwon Sang-woo & Kim Ah-joong, Song Seung-heon & Han Chae-young, Gong Yoo & Yoon Eun-hye had a hot competition. However, the first generation hot-body star, Song Seung-heon and global star Kwon Sang-woo was no match for "Rain"'s perfect body. And many beautiful top female stars couldn't beat Lee Hyo-lee's sexiness.

The world star, "Rain",...| More

Opening June 27th at Yongsan CGV in central Seoul, the 6th edition of the Mise-en-scene's Genre Film Festival (MGFF) will run until July 3rd, screening over 60 short films. This year's slogan is "Beyond the Barrier of Genres", the event will celebrate films that challenge conventional genres.

MGFF began six years ago when a group of young directors collaborated on a festival that would support emerging cinematic talent. This year 10 of Korea's top directors joined hands to curate and program the festival. Known both at home and internationally, they are KIM Seong-su ("Musa", "Please Teach Me English"), HEO Jin-ho ("Christmas in August"), KIM Ji-woon ("A Bittersweet Life"), OH Seung-wook (Kilimanjaro), Lee Jae-Yong ("Untold Scandal"), KIM Dae-seung ("Blood Rain"), BONG Joon-ho ("The Host"), JANG Joon-hwan ("Save the Green Planet"), RYOO Seung-wan ("The City of Violence"), and SONG Hae-seong ("Failan"). HAN Seok-kyu and CHA Seung-won will play the leading roles in a crime film with the Korean title Nooneneun Noon, i-eneun i, which means "Eye for an Eye, Tooth for a Tooth". HAN's character is a top detective and CHA will play a bold criminal who doesn't hesitate to commit a crime even with the police present.

Blood Rain - better than I expected by angryangel214

W
hen I read that Blood Rain was considered a "splatter film," I decided against seeing it. Splatter films usually have no plot, no story, no character growth, no socially redeeming value. What they do have is splatter. A lot of spatter. Yawn. Been there, done that, and no one is interested in the bloody tee shirt. As a genre, the splatter film has been bled to death.

Here is a movie that, while parts are quite grisly to say the least, defies the convention of your typical splatter movie. Blood Rain combines the best of time-honored conventions, such as the whodunit of Ellery Queen and Sam Spade, the creepiness of horror as found in the original Halloween, and satisfies a history buff with a generous depiction of life during the later Josen Dynesty (1392-1910). Blood Rain is a better movie than I was expecting.

The story stays focused on a murder investigation in a remote island village. The paper tribute to the government is destroyed in a mysterious fire. A ship's crewmember disappears. A shaman is possessed during a ritual. A madman prophesies that a blood rain is going to fall.

Five people were killed in horrific ways seven years ago. Now someone wants the village to think the ghost of one of the victims has returned looking for revenge. The investigator ignores the superstitions of the villagers and looks for the criminal behind the crimes. What he uncovers in the end is more than a little disheartening.

I appreciate the dignity and the grace brought into the making of this film. Most directors would have focused solely on gore and violence to "tell" the story. The restraint displayed here allows us to hear the story rather than the non-stop shrieking of victims being hacked to pieces, which is common to most American splatter films.

I recommend this movie to anyone who is tired of Freddy, Jason and Michael.
