The Korean Film Council (KOFIC) announced the selection of KIM Tae-gyoon's "Crossing" as the Korean submission to the 81st Academy Awards (Oscars) for the Best Foreign Film section.

The KOFIC committee in charge of the selection motivated their decision by saying that they believe that the human drama "Crossing" is the best contender in the light of the academy's preferences based on previous Best Foreign Film winners.

The committee members came to their decision after considering both the content in line with expected Academy tastes and the potential for a successful commercial U.S. release of the shortlisted films.

"Crossing" was shortlisted along with KIM Jee-woon's Korean style western The Good, the Bad, the Weird, the sports drama Forever the Moment by LIM Soon-rye, the Vietnam drama Sunny by the hands of LEE Joon-ik, and NA Hong-jin's social thriller The Chaser.

The North Korean defector movie "Crossing" will represent South Korean cinema as a possible competitor in the foreign film section at the 81st Academy Awards, the Korean Film Council announced Thursday.

"The seven jury members decided, after a two-day debate from July 30 to Aug. 1, to submit `Crossing' for the competition spot in the foreign language film section of the Academy Awards", said the council. The film's publicist, Coming Soon, also confirmed the news.

"Crossing" beat other big Korean films "The Good, the Bad, the Weird" and "The Chaser", both of which were shown at the Cannes Film Festival in May. The nation's first movie tackling the issue of North Korean refugees was judged, considering its international appeal and potential to draw more public attention to the pressing issue, to be most appropriate, said Han Sang-joon, head of the jury.

KIM Tae-gyoon's "Crossing" has been bought for a Japanese release by Cinekwanon, according to "Crossing"'s production company Camp B. In addition, the 27th Vancouver International Film Festival invited the film dealing with North Korea to its Dragon & Tigers: the cinemas of East Asia section.

"Crossing" stars CHA In-pyo as a husband and father in North Korea who crosses the Chinese border to find medicines for his ill wife. His son also enters China in search of his father who has not returned. The film carries an overtly Christian message which pleased some and displeased others. "Crossing" was released in June this year.

Vancouver International Film Festival will take place from September 25 until October 10. "Crossing" is the successor of films like "Secret Sunshine" (Miryang), "The Host" (Gwemool), "Memories of Murder" (Sarinui Choo-eok), and "Duelist" (Hyeongsa) in Vancouver's Dragon & Tigers section.
