"The Show Must Go on" Wins Blue Dragon Award

Director Han Jae-rim's "The Show Must Go On" has won the domestic award for best picture.

At the 28th Blue Dragon Film Awards Friday, the movie's lead actor Song Kang-ho also won best actor. Jeon Do-yeon won best actress for her performance in "Secret Sunshine". Earlier in May, the actress won the best actress award at the Cannes Film Festival for her role in the film.

The best director award went to Heo Jin-ho for "Happiness".

Kim Sang-ho was named best supporting actor for his role in "The Happy Life" and Nah Moon-hee best supporting actress for her role in "Cruel Winter Blues".

The awards are the nation's version of Hollywood's Oscars.

Korean Films in NY Asian Film Fest

This year's New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF) features a spate of prominent Korean films and runs from June 22nd to July 8th. Now in its 6th year, the festival selects 30 top Asian films to screen along with three programs of award winning shorts taken from Korea's very own Mise-en-Scene's Genre Film Festival (MGFF).

Director Lee Jae-Yong will attend the festival and personally introduce programs one and two of the MGFF shorts. Program three will consist of shorts selected by Korea's most innovative genre auteurs, BONG Joon-ho, KIM Ji-woon, RYOO Seung-wan, JANG Joon-hwan, Lee Jae-Yong, and PARK Chan-wook.

A total of nine Korean features will be showcased during the two-week event, including Lee Jae-Yong's high school cult-comedy "Dasepo Naughty Girls" ("Dasepo Girl"), with the director present at the screening. HAN Jae-rim will also attend for the screening of his sophomore effort "The Show Must Go On" starring SONG Kang-ho.

Korean Films Attack the Big Apple

Korean cinema will take a big bite of the Big Apple as the 2007 New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF) begins Friday. The festival will feature more than 30 works from the East, of which almost a third are Korean. The event will take place at the IFC Center until July 5 and at Japan Society July 5 - 8.

"A 17-day-long festival will feature films from Park Chan-wook, Johnnie To, Kiyoshi Kurosawa and Takashi Miike. This year's festival will introduce you to buffalo-busting action flicks from Thailand, cartilage-cracking gangster films from Korea, and the first gore flick ever made in Pakistan!" the festival said in a statement.

Dubbed "one of the city's most valuable events" by the New York Times, the film festival is America's leading showcase for Asian movies. Launched in 2002 by Subway Cinema, the festival has featured over 100 films from China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Taiwan and Thailand.

'Korea is New Hub of Asian Pop Culture'

The New York Times says Korea is the emerging hub of Asian pop culture in film and music, as Hong Kong has lost its power as the regional cultural epicenter.

The daily made the evaluation in a report on the New York Asian Film Festival that opens Friday.

The report mentioned the Korean films "Cruel Winter Blues" and "The Show Must Go on", saying this year's festival will have Korea remain "the primary creative force".

14 Korean Films go to Italy's Far East Fest

The 9th Udine Far East Film Festival boasts one of the largest showcases of Asian cinema in Europe. This year around 60 titles from across Asia were selected to screen at the event which runs April 20th to 28th in the picturesque northern Italian city. This year 14 top Korean films were invited, of which several will have their International Premiere at the festival.

Making their International festival debut are LEE Jeong-beom's gangster-themed drama "Cruel Winter Blues", JANG Jin's comedy-noir "Righteous Ties", JANG Moon-il's romantic-comedy "A Good Day for an Affair", BYEON Seung-wook's drama "Solace". Two of Korea's top-grossing hits of late 2006 will have their European Premier: CHOI Dong-hoon's high-stakes comedy-thriller "Tazza: The High Rollers" ("The War of Flower") and KIM Yong-hwa's weighty satire "200 Pounds Beauty", a look at the culture of plastic-surgery in the entertainment industry.
