Seoul AniCinema, Korea's first animation film theater, will open on Jan. 19. The Seoul metropolitan government and the Seoul Industry Promotion Foundation have decided to open Seoul AniCinema in the Seoul Animation Center in Yejang-dong, Jung-gu, Seoul. The theater will show domestically produced animation movies.
Establishing a theater that specializes exclusively in animation movies has been a long-cherished dream of Korean animation film producers. Marketing domestically produced animation movies has been a quite challenging task so far. Most animation productions had to be presented in tie-in deals or withdrawn from cinemas ahead of schedule due to the aggressive marketing of blockbuster movies.
As its opening film, Seoul AniCinema will show "Hammer Boy", based on the original comic book by Huh Young-man, from Jan. 19 through Feb. 9.

Showings of Hammer Boy will be extended to more theatres since its first screening on August 5. Sold-out march of the animation at major theatres such as Mega Box and CGV last weekend has shed a bright light of success.
Seoul Theatre started the showing on August 9, and more theatres in Gwangju and Honam areas are joining the Hammer Boy group. Many theatres are volunteering to invite the animation for showing after observing the unprecedented success during the first week. It is a good news for Korea's animation industry that has been suffering with an unfavorable distribution environment.
Hammer Boy takes the perspective of children between 5 and 10 years old to target family-unit audiences. Children of the main target age group were invited as the monitoring members from the early stages of production; results were taken into consideration in animating and storyline works.
A new distribution strategy of official wide release reflective of the production team's confiden...| More
