"On Air" Looks Into Making of Dramas

Some 20 dramas are aired every week. There are daily dramas, morning dramas, weekend dramas… and Wednesday-Thursday dramas. In this "kingdom" of drama, "On Air", portrays how Korean soaps are made.

"On Air" is directed by Sin Woo-cheol and written by Kim Eun-sook, the creators of hit dramas "Lovers in Paris" (2004), "Lovers in Prague" (2005) and "Lovers" (2006). They teamed up again to give an exclusive behind-the-scenes view of Korean dramas.

"This is a drama about the people who create these dramas. Nowadays, Korean dramas are not only aired in Korea but in other countries as well. I wanted to write a drama about the processes and behind-the-scenes stories with a dramatic and exaggerative touch", said Kim at a press conference last week at SBS.

8 Korean Films Screen at China's Top Fest

Seven South Korean features and one short film will be presented at this year's 10th anniversary edition of the Shanghai International Film Festival. China's top film event opens June 16th for a nine-day run.

Of the seven features, two have been selected in competition sections. Director LEE Joon-ik's "Radio Star" (2006) is nominated for the Jin Jue Award, while KWON Hyeong-jin's debut feature "For Horowitz" ("My Piano") is nominated for the Asia New Talent Award.

In the Panorama section a variety of genres in Korean film will be showcased including comedy sequel "Mapado 2: Back to the Island", director YOO Ha's gangster-drama "A Dirty Carnival", gothic-cult-musical Night Ballad For "The Ghost Theater", melodrama "Lost in Love" starring SEOL Kyeong-gu, and youthful comedy "Miracle on 1st Street" by YOON Je-Kyoon.

Seol Kyeong-gu: no Ordinary Action Hero

"Cruel Winter Blues", which goes on release Thursday, is a little different from conventional action flicks, even if it deals with revenge and betrayal like much of the genre. But apart from a special emphasis on a mother's love, the movie stands out from the crowd thanks to a masterful performance by Seol Kyeong-gu, who comes to feel uncontrollable love for the mother of an enemy he has to "dispose of". Though passionate and ready to take on anyone, Seol in the movie also portrays a sneaky, shameless coward. The Chosun Ilbo spoke to him about his life and craft.

Song Yoon-ah Gets First Billing at Last

The actress Song Yoon-ah is as frank and open as her smile. "Do you remember that my name was always billed after my male partners in my previous films? They said Shin Hyeon-joon and Song Yoon-ah in 'Face', Seol Kyeong-gu and Song Yoon-ah in 'Lost In Love' and Park Joong-hoon and Song Yoon-ah in 'A Masterpiece in My Life', something like that". But her latest horror movie "Arang", which was recently released, gives her first billing for the first time. She plays a detective opposite the younger actor Lee Dong-wook in the movie. "I felt responsible for my name for the first time", Song says.

On MBC's new drama "My Beloved Sister", which started airing Saturday, she plays the title role, a 26-year-old art student growing up in a rich family who must suddenly take on the responsibility of head of the family and take care of her brothers after their father goes bankrupt and then missing.

Love, loss and lucid cinematic silence

"Lost in Love" is a confession of fear, be it fear of love, of regret, of loss or of saying the wrong things out of indifference or ignorance.
The film follows the emotional paths of two college friends, Yeon-su and Woo-jae, over their 10 years of friendship.
Yeon-su (Song Yoon-ah) has long had a crush on Woo-jae (Seol Kyeong-gu), an athlete on the school crew team. But she's not bold enough to say it, and he's not attentive enough to sense it.
She instead chooses a safer route by trying to create seeming coincidences that might give her an opportunity to move the relationship forward.
For instance, when the last bus to Seoul is about to leave the terminal during her visit to his military base, she intentionally waits in the bathroom for the bus to leave, hoping it will give her a natural excuse to spend a night with Woo-jae.
