Hit movies revisit audiences as musicals

Creating a new catch phrase "moviecal boom" in the country's entertainment industry, a number of musicals based on hit movies will be staged in the coming months. Smash-hit Korean movies, including "200 Pounds Beauty", "Singles", "Love So Divine", "My Love My Bride" and "The Parade of the Youth", are a few examples among many moviecals already announced for a rebirth on stage. The moviecal boom doesn't stop there. Older hit movies like "The Gingko Bed" (1995), which starred Han Seok-kyu and Shim Hye-jin, "The Harmonium In My Memory" (1999), featuring Lee Byeong-heon and Jeon Do-yeon, winner of this year's Canne Film Festival, and internationally acclaimed director Im Kwon-taek's "The General's Son (1990)" are also to be staged next year.

Ha Ji-won to Hold Fan Meeting in Japan

Actress Ha Ji-won, well known for her roles in the movies "Love So Divine" and "Duelist" as well as the TV dramas "Something Happened in Bali" and "Damo", will hold her first meeting with Japanese fans May 26.

The meeting will take place at Tokyo's Nakano Sun Plaza Hall, which can accommodate 2,200 people. Ha will shake hands with all of her fans who come to see her on that day.

Ha's fan base in Japan has expanded since movies and TV dramas starring the actress opposite such top hallyu stars as Kwon Sang-woo, Yeon Jeong-hoon, Kang Dong-won, So Ji-sub, Jo In-seong and Lee Seo-jin were shown in Japan. The news about her first fan meeting in Japan has drawn significant attention from Ha's fans.

Pop star Eugene (Yoo Jin) makes debut on musical stage

Amid the growing interest in musicals based on hit movies, several musical versions of movies and TV dramas will be staged this year. Smash-hit Korean movies including "Singles", "Love So Divine", "My Little Bride" and "Old Miss Diary - movie" will revisit audiences on stages in the coming months.

The musical "Innocent Steps" began its three-month run yesterday at the Baekam Art Hall in Samsung-dong, southern Seoul. It runs through July 1.

It has received much media attention because it features Eugene (Yoo Jin), a former member of popular girl group S.E.S and now a TV actress.

Eugene (Yoo Jin) debuted in 1997 as a member of S.E.S, and has more recently become a successful TV actress. She has also tried film acting, with a leading role in upcoming film "Unstoppable Marriage", which is scheduled to be released in April.

Happy Marriage of Musicals, Cinema?

Are musicals and cinema friends or foes? It may all depend on how you look at it.

The symbiotic relationship between the two genres has been already tested between Broadway and Hollywood.

Broadway and the West End have successfully produced musicals such as "Beauty and the Beast" and "The Lion King" in 1990, based on Disney movies.

The Korean musical industry is now also looking to translate hit films into musicals, making the best use of the boom in the local musical scene.

"Movical", a combination word consisting of "movie and musical", is emerging as a Korean slang buzzword on the local musical scene.

The interaction between the two industries dates back to a local film, "Waikiki Brothers", (2001) directed by Lim Soon-rye, which was adapted for the stage in 2004.

This year, about five or six musicals based on films will be staged.

Film "Love So Divine" Tops Oricon Chart of Japan

The popularity of actor Kwon Sang-woo, a hallyu star, is rising by the day.

According to data released by the Oricon Chart of Japan on Feb. 1, the collector's DVD edition of the film "Love So Divine" (2004) starring Kwon topped Oricon's daily DVD chart in its general division. The film's outstanding performance is noteworthy in that it swept the Oricon Chart only one day after the DVD was released on Feb. 1.

The film's regular DVD edition that was also released the same day ranked seventh on the chart, attesting to the hallyu star's great popularity. Such an impressive performance by Kwon in Japan also bodes well for the prospects of the film "Running Wild" (2005), starring Kwon and Yoo Ji-tae, scheduled for release in Japan on Feb. 11.

In addition, the DVD of the film "Marathon" (2005), starring Jo Seung-woo, was released on Jan. 27 and finished 19th on the Oricon monthly DVD chart, showing excellent overall prospects for Korean films in Japan.
