The 12th Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival (PiFan) kicks off this July 18 – 27 with the biggest line-up of genre films in Asia. Best of all are the return of high-profile Korean films to the fest and a warmer interaction with the local film industry after setbacks in previous years. KOFIC will again host a Korean film night event, this time an outdoor barbeque reception for guests during the festival.

Two Korean films will vie along with 10 foreign films in PiFan's main competition section Puchon Choice for a variety of cash awards including best feature. First is the critically praised sleeper hit "The Chaser" by NA Hong-jin. The tale of an ex-cop-turned-pimp on the trail of a prostitute-killer, made stars of its two leads, HA Jeong-woo and KIM Yoon-seok.

Also in this section is the World Premiere of new Korean horror, "Death Bell", by debut director CHANG. The HD feature is set in a high school where the brightest 20 students are struggling to survive as cla...| More

Opening June 27th at Yongsan CGV in central Seoul, the 6th edition of the Mise-en-scene's Genre Film Festival (MGFF) will run until July 3rd, screening over 60 short films. This year's slogan is "Beyond the Barrier of Genres", the event will celebrate films that challenge conventional genres.

MGFF began six years ago when a group of young directors collaborated on a festival that would support emerging cinematic talent. This year 10 of Korea's top directors joined hands to curate and program the festival. Known both at home and internationally, they are KIM Seong-su ("Musa", "Please Teach Me English"), HEO Jin-ho ("Christmas in August"), KIM Ji-woon ("A Bittersweet Life"), OH Seung-wook (Kilimanjaro), Lee Jae-Yong ("Untold Scandal"), KIM Dae-seung ("Blood Rain"), BONG Joon-ho ("The Host"), JANG Joon-hwan ("Save the Green Planet"), RYOO Seung-wan ("The City of Violence"), and SONG Hae-seong ("Failan"). Along with a number of Korean stars taking lead roles in Hollywood productions this year, supporting actor PARK Jeong-hak, who is known to Korean audiences for his roles in "MUSA" – The Warrior (2001) and "The Restless" (2006), has been cast in a French comedy-romance entitled Chapeu de Roue.

The film is directed by actress-turned-director Tonie Marshall known for previous comedy-romances France Boutique (2003) and Nearest to Heaven (2002). Marshall came to Seoul in March to personally oversee auditions for the role. She expressed confidence in Park's solid acting skills as well as in his sexy and debonair demeanor, according to PARK's management agency Sidus HQ.

The film, which is currently shooting in France, stars Nathalie Baye and Edouard Baer, and is about the mistress of the French Environment minister who gets involved in the illegal weapons trade, during which she meets and falls for Hang-soo, a Korean arms dealer, played by PARK. The Korean actor left his homeland ...| More

Actor Park Jeong-hak, who appeared in the Korean films 'Musa' and 'The Restless', has been cast in the latest film by renowned director Tonie Marshall, "Chapeau de Roue".

Park's management agency Sidus HQ says that Marshall, who personally oversaw auditions in Seoul in March, said that Park emanates sophistication as well as sexiness. The filmmaker expressed confidence that Park's solid acting will be expressed to the full in his movie.

Chapeu de Roue is the story of a mistress of a French environmental minister who gets involved in illegal weapons trade, during which she meets a Korean arms dealer. The film is their love story.

Park will play 'Hangsoo', which is not a large role but significant enough to leave an impression. Park joined the filming in France on Friday. ...| More

Korean actor Jeong Woo-Seong has been approached by Hong Kong producer Terence Chang, a fellow Hong Kong producer-partner of director John Woo, about a role in Woo's upcoming film "Battle of Red Cliff", which stars Chow Yun-fat and Tony Leung Chiu-wai.

"I am still talking to Jung Woo-sung. He hasn't read the script and nothing is confirmed", Chang recently said in an e-mail to The Associated Press.

Jeong made his film debut in the 1994 movie "The Fox with Nine Tails" with Korean actress Ko So-young. He gained widespread acclaim in Kim Sung-soo's 1997 film "Beat" where he played a high school student, who is forced into gang life.

His appearance in "The Battle of Red Cliff" won't be Jung's first time working with a Chinese actress. In 2001, he played a long-haired slave in Kim's "Musa" film, which also featured Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi and was well-received in Korea and overseas.

"The Battle of Red Cliff" is based on the events of the Three Kingdoms period – specifically, ...| More
