WON Bin to Star in BONG Joon-ho's Latest

Korean Wave star and household heartthrob WON Bin has been cast in director BONG Joon-ho's latest project ' Mother ' alongside veteran actress KIM Hye-ja. This will mark actor WON Bin's first return to the screen since 2004's box office smash "Taegukgi" and the popular "My Brother", released the same year.

BONG, who is counted one of Korea's top directors, after his 2006 film "The Host" quickly became the highest grossing film of all time at the Korean box office, presented the new project last month at the HAF project mart in Hong Kong. Production house Barunson Film Division is managing the project with CHOI Jae-won and SEO Woo-sik producing. The film is expected to start shooting this Fall on a budget of US$5 million.

Veteran actress Kim Hye-ja and hallyu star Won Bin will star in a new film directed by Bong Joon-ho, renowned for local blockbuster "The Host".

Titled " Mother ", the film has been cast and shooting will begin this fall, with an early 2009 opening planned.

The plot involves a mother who struggles to clear a false charge against her son, who is involved in a murder case.

Kim will return to the big screen ten years after 1999's "Mayonnaise".

The film marks Won's comeback four years after 2004's "My Brother" and will be his first appearance since being discharged from military service.

Bong is known to be a big fan of Kim, with high praise for her acting, which he thinks touches the hearts of the viewers. Kim has been long dubbed "an ideal type of Korean mother" for focusing on mother roles. Deep film legacy draws director back to the lens

Ha Myeong-joong will never forget the last phone conversation he had with his older brother in early 1979. "You should be a director, not an actor", thundered his sibling, who, at 4 a.m. was obviously under the influence of alcohol.
That older brother was Ha Gil-jong, a star director known for making films that were critical of the military regimes.
"Okay, I will keep that in mind", answered Ha, who was then a well-regarded actor whose fame had spread to Hong Kong and Japan.
Ha said that there was something in his brother's voice that he could not resist.
Shortly after the phone conversation, Ha Gil-jong had a stroke and died three days later, at the age of 38.
At the funeral Ha hugged his brother's coffin and, with tears in his eyes, swore that he would honor his deceased brother's wishes. He made his directorial debut soon after, in 1983.

HAN Seok-kyu and CHA Seung-won's On-screen Showdown

HAN Seok-kyu and CHA Seung-won will play the leading roles in a crime film with the Korean title Nooneneun Noon, i-eneun i, which means "Eye for an Eye, Tooth for a Tooth". HAN's character is a top detective and CHA will play a bold criminal who doesn't hesitate to commit a crime even with the police present.

AHN Kwon-tae is directing and the film is a production of Taewon Entertainment en Yoobiyoo Film. AHN is the writer/director of the 2004 film "My Brother" ("Hello Brother"). Filming started in June and the film will be released next year.

HAN and CHA are both major actors in Korea. HAN's accolades include "Shiri" and "Christmas in August". CHA started out in comedies like My Teacher, Mr.Kim, but now also takes on dramatic roles like in "Blood Rain".

Kim Hae-sook Wins at Japan's Movie Critics Awards

Middle-aged actress Kim Hae-sook has won the International Cooperation Award at the 16th Japanese Movie Critics Awards held by Japan's Movie Critics Association on March 27 in Tokyo. The event was sponsored by Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology along with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Kim is the first Korean celebrity to receive the International Cooperation Award, whose previous winners include Hong Kong star Leslie Cheung. Kim's agency cited the event organizers as saying that the actress received the award for her outstanding acting in TV dramas and movies that have aired in Japan and for contributing to movie exchanges between Korea and Japan.

Kim has appeared in all four "season series" of drama director Yoon Seok-ho, including "Winter Sonata" and "Summer Scent".
