A musical rendition of the local hit film, "My Scary Girl" will debut in the United States in July. The musical will join the lineup of the 2008 Musical Theater Lab for new musicals in development at the Barrington Stage Company (BSC).

It is the first Korean work selected by the BSC, the renowned American performing arts support group, to be presented to its theater lab.

The BSC is a well-known non-profit organization that supports the performing arts and helps new musicals in preparation debut on a trial stage on and off Broadway. The show runs in the United States from July 9 to 26.

Also, "My Scary Girl" will go to the final round in the New York Musical Festival, which will be held in fall.

Based on a 2006 Korean comedy/horror/romance film, "My Scary Girl" is the story of a man who discovers dark secrets about his new girlfriend.

Ahn Sam, an official of the Musical Heaven, the local production company, said that the U.S.-based comp...
Director JEONG Yong-ki tried his hand again at comedy and selected a winning leading duo in PARK Yong-woo and LEE Bo-yeong, aptly complemented by a number of supporting roles. The film is situated during the final days of the Japanese colonization of Korea.

"Once upon a Time" is a well balanced heist comedy; including fast and dynamic action and fight scenes, glitter and glamour, and plenty of jokes. The humorous scenario is well handled by the director and the actors' fun during filming is apparent for anybody to see.

PARK transforms from the shy guy who never had a girlfriend in his breakthrough film "My Scary Girl" into a confident player. His eyes are set on the beautiful singer played by LEE, however, she is also pursued by a Korean officer in Japanese service.

PARK, LEE and Korean officers of the Japanese army become entangled in a struggle for a phenomenal diamond; while freedom fighters and pro-Japanese Koreans clash during the dying days of the Japanese occupation....
Musicals based on hit movies are set to dominate the local entertainment industry this year.

Of the musicals scheduled to be staged this year, more than 30 percent are based on or related to movies. There are already many Korean adaptations of Broadway musicals based on Hollywood films. But what makes this year remarkable is that there will be more musicals based on Korean movies.

Why are Korean production companies turning to "moviecals"? The answer is quite simple. Audiences already know and like the storylines of hit movies, and are therefore more likely to watch musicals that have been adapted from movies.

Moviecal productions in Korea are following in Broadway's footsteps.

Like Disney, MGM and Warner Brothers staged musicals based on the smash-hit movies they produced, Korean moviecals are mostly created by companies who hold the copyrights of scripts and titles. This allows companies to invest more in castings or employing famous composers as they don't need to fork o...

Koreans are using the word "movical" more and more these days. It is an apparent keyword to define a trend in the local musical industry.

"Movical", a combination of "movie" and "musical", refers to interaction between the two industries. It started with a local film, "Waikiki Brothers", (2001) directed by Lim Soon-rye, which was adapted for the musical stage in 2004.

For this year alone, about seven or eight musicals based on films are expected to be put on stage.

"Singles", the musical based on the namesake local film, which premiered last year, will launch its second season, starring singer-turned-actor Son Ho-young, former member of all-men pop group G.O.D. starting from Jan. 15 to Feb. 24 at Hoam Art Hall.

"Radio Star", based on the film featuring Park Joong-hoon and Ahn Seong-gi, will now be made into the musical, starring comedian-turned-actor Jung Sung-hwa who stole the limelight in last year's excellent performance of "Man of La...
CJ Entertainment said Tuesday that it sold film "The Restless" to France at the 1st Asian Film Award recently held in Hong Kong.

A company staffer said that European nations tend to see fantasy movies like "The Restless" as works depicting typical Asian sentiment.

The film distributor also sold the joint Korean-Japanese film "Virgin Snow" to Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand, "The Chief and The Governor" to Thailand, "My Tutor Friend Lesson II" to Malaysia, "The Wig" ("Scary Hair") to Latin America, and "My Scary Girl" and "Lump Sugar" to Taiwan....
