Time to check on what's new at the movies.
This week, there's an equal mix of local and Hollywood productions.
Here's Son Heekyung.
First up this week is the Korean film, "My Tutor Friend Lesson II", sequel to the 2003 hit romantic comedy.
The theme here doesn't stray that far from the first.
A boy and a girl of the same age meet as student and tutor.
Only this time it's an ethnic Korean woman in Japan, who falls in love with a Korean student on the island.
Later, she comes to Seoul to meet her lover, and confesses her true feelings.
Another notable change are new faces in the lead roles.
Actor Park Ki-woong stars alongside Lee Cheong-ah .

Another new film from Korea is "Meet Mr. Daddy" ("Shiny Day")
The drama is set against the backdrop of the 2002 World Cup.
Park Shin-yang plays a small-time gangster who suddenly finds out he has a young daughter.
What's more stressful is he has to live with the seven-year-old girl.

'Tutor' Teaches No-Fun Lesson

"My Tutor Friend Lesson II" is being promoted as a sequel to the 2003 hit romantic comedy of the same name. It only follows the basic theme of a boy and girl of the same age that happen to meet as student and tutor, and later fall in love.

New actors are cast in this movie. But ironically little changes. It is a typical high-teen romance with a cast of wacky youngsters _ you can easily guess how things turn out. The only big change is that it is worse than the original.

Directed by Kim Ho-jung and Ji Kil-woong, the film is a romantic tale between a Korean man and Japanese woman.

Junko (played by Lee Cheong-ah) is a Japanese of Korean ancestry, who falls in love with a Korean student in Japan. As he goes back to Seoul, she decides to visit him.

Junko finally comes to Seoul as an exchange student to the same university as her sweetheart. She finds lodging at a guesthouse that provides room and board.

France Buys Korean Film "The Restless"

CJ Entertainment said Tuesday that it sold film "The Restless" to France at the 1st Asian Film Award recently held in Hong Kong.

A company staffer said that European nations tend to see fantasy movies like "The Restless" as works depicting typical Asian sentiment.

The film distributor also sold the joint Korean-Japanese film "Virgin Snow" to Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand, "The Chief and The Governor" to Thailand, "My Tutor Friend Lesson II" to Malaysia, "The Wig" ("Scary Hair") to Latin America, and "My Scary Girl" and "Lump Sugar" to Taiwan....| More

My Wife is a Gangster 3 Tops Pre-Sales to Asia

The American Film Market (AFM) saw a number of Korean films soldto various markets, with pre-sales on Korean sequel My Wife is a Gangster 3, closing successive deals throughout Asia. Korean distribution arm Showbox claims deals to Asian markets for the film reached a record high for any Korean film sold at AFM to Asian countries, not including Japan.

The original "My Wife is a Gangster" was a domestic box-office sensation in 2001, selling over 5 million tickets nationwide. The third outing for the franchise has already created a buzz, as it stars Taiwanese beauty Shu Qi as the gangster wife. She is known in the west for her award-winning roles in Hou Hsaio Hsien's films Three Times and Millenium Mambo and for her role in The Transporter.

Good Sequels

Most popular movies this year are expected to generate sequels. It is evidence that Korean films also have "brand" power. It is a phenomenon caused by sequels that were more popular than the sequels. The key to success is to continue with the sequel but differentiate it by adding new material.

Turning the Success of a Sequel into a Brand-

Sixty-five million viewers crowded to the theaters for "The War of Flower", where at the end of the movie Goni (Jo Seung-woo) picks up the phone at a foreign casino phone booth, giving rise to speculations of a sequel. Yoon Sang-o of Sidus FNH said, "It was originally a scene where Hwa-ran (Lee Soo-kyeong) picks up the phone when Goni calls, but it was cut during the editing process, and it does not indicate a sequel", but added, "We have not reached the final decision, but we may produce a sequel with the topic of poker", announcing his intention to turn "The War of Flower" into a brand.
