2008 Sees Korean Stars Swarm Hollywood

While Hollywood seems to be gaining ground at the Korean box office in 2008, a growing number of Korean stars are invading Hollywood's home turf this year, bringing Korean talent into view on the world stage. Local celebrities such as Jeon Ji-hyeon, Lee Byeon-heon, Jung Ji-hoon ("Rain"), Jang Don-gun, and Korean-American Daniel Henney are currently filming or have already wrapped roles in major US studio productions.

Actress Jeon, going by her English name Gianna Jun, recently completed the shooting of her lead role in "Blood: The Last Vampire", a US – Hong Kong co-production set in the Tokyo of 1970. Jeon plays Saya, a vampire working for a covert US government agency that hunts and destroys demons. She is assigned to a military school where she must find out which of her fellow classmates is a demon in disguise.

Lee Byeong-heon Commences Hollywood Action Film

Korean wave star LEE Byeong-heon is currently filming scenes in his Hollywood debut, G.I. Joe, an adaptation of the popular action-hero comic book series. LEE will play Storm Shadow, a ninja with a dark past who joins the G.I. Joe team.

The plot, like the comic, centers on an elite military unit of highly trained recruits, each with his own specialty skill. In the film they take on an evil and powerful criminal syndicate led by Cobra, a notorious arms dealer. LEE's character, Storm Shadow, is well known to readers of the comic and was even spun-off into its own series.

The big-budget feature is a Paramount Pictures production and is directed by Stephen Sommers whose previous films include Van Helsing, The Mummy Returns, and The Jungle Book. The film also stars Channing Tatum, Rachel Nichols, and Dennis Quaid. It is slated for release in the summer of 2009.

Lee Joon-ik Casts Soo-ae and Eom Tae-woong

The leading roles for Lee Joon-ik's Nimeun Meon Gose (English translation: "someone dear is far away") went to Soo-ae and Eom Tae-woong. Soo-ae will play the female lead role. Her character joins an entertainment group bound for Vietnam to entertain military troops, but her real agenda is to search for her husband who serves in Vietnam. The husband will be portrayed by Eom. The film is set during the Vietnam War in the 70s.

Director LEE has been influential with films like: "The King and the Clown", "Radio Star", and "Once upon a Time in a Battlefield" ("Hwangsanbul"). "The King and the Clown" became the most popular Korean film in 2006 and is currently second after BONG Joon-ho's "The Host". "The King and the clown" was a surprise hit when the film went on from a modest release to become a record breaking film through positive word-of-mouth.

[DVD review]Time and space obscured for money

"Once in a Summer" is a romance fantasy that deliberately obscures the time and place in which it is set.
The film is a love epic that features an affair between two intellectuals, and it's set "somewhere, sometime" in a turbulent phase of Korean history.
Seok-young (played by Lee Byeong-heon) is an unwilling student activist. He rarely attends student protests and does not care much for politics, at a time when most college students are politically active ― either from a sense of duty or as a way to seduce girls.
But when he joins his fellow students to help farmers in a fictional town called "Sunari", he meets Jeong-in, the beautiful daughter of a communist who runs the village library.
The story taps into the ideological conflicts of Korean history while focusing on the couple's love affair. But the tensions between them are all too familiar. Lee Byeong-heon Visits Japan to Promote his Movie

Actor Lee Byeong-heon known, as Byonsama in Japan, flew to Japan on Tuesday to promote his recent film "Once in a Summer".

The Japanese press reported Wednesday that the top Korean star came to Japan along with actress Soo-Ae, who played opposite his role in the film. When they arrived at Narita International Airport, they were greeted by cheers and applause by some 1,000 fans who were waiting for them from early in the morning, it added.

According to the Japanese sports newspaper Spornichi, Lee smiled and waved at the fans and expressed his gratitude by saying "Thank you, and I am pleased to be here".

The two stars will attend the film's preview on Wednesday and hold a press conference on Thursday.
