The eighth edition of the Hong Kong Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF) 2010 has selected two Korean projects among 25 Asian projects for its upcoming edition, March 22 – 24. Award-winning auteur LEE Yoon-ki and commercially successful director JEON Yeon-soo will present their latest projects to potential investors.
LEE's project is titled "Dear Comrade", a Korea-Japan-Vietnam co-production. It tells the story of a decades-long love between a Vietnamese man and a North Korean woman who first meet when he is sent to Pyeongyang as a student in 1971. Produced by Japan's Espirit Inc. the film is written by LEE and has a budget of US$ 3 million.
JEON's project, produced by Sidus FNH, is titled "Exit to Exist". Based on a best-selling Korean novel titled Shoot Me in the Heart, it is the tale of two young men who meet in a mental hospital – one is locked up because he is crazy, the other going crazy because he is locked up. Korea's most popular film of 2009 is the disaster blockbuster "Haeundae", the Korean Film Council said yesterday.
Released July 22, the film opened at 753 screens nationwide and drew 11.3 million spectators. Many more, however, are expected to watch the movie via online video download or DVD or videotape rental.
The DVD of the movie will see a February release.
According to a council report on the film industry's performance in the first 11 months of the year, the popularity of a movie differs by distribution channel. That means each movie has different numbers of spectators at the theater, online video download, and DVD and videotape rental.
The popularity of movies between July and November through three distribution channels is follows:

The Grand Bell (Daejong) Awards, a prestigious film award in Korea, have stirred controversy yet again. The list of Best Leading Actress nominees that was announced October 21 includes Kim Min-seon ("Portrait Of A Beauty"), Soo-ae ("Sunny"), Kim Hye-ja ("Mother - 2009"), Choi Kang-hee ("Ae-ja") and Jang Nara ("Sky And Sea").
Nominees for the Best Picture award are "Mother", "Sky And Sea", "The Divine Weapon", "Haeundae" and "Take Off".
The controvery arose because actress Ha Ji-won of "Closer to Heaven" and "Haeundae", which drew more than 10 million vieiwers, and actress Kim Ha-neul of the hit movie "My Girlfriend is an Agent" were not included on the list. Morever, the movie "Thirst", which received the Jury Award at this year's Cannes Film Festival, and Kim Ji-woon's "The Good, The Bad, The Weird" also failed to be nominated for the Best Picture or the Best Director awards.
