Lee Joon-ik's "Radio Star" has earned average ratings of 9.22 out of 10 in a poll of 7,749 Netizens by the portal site Naver late last month, easily topping the popularity chart among those who watched the film. According to the Korean Film Council, "Radio Star" drew 150,684 viewers on the first weekend of its release on Sept. 28, but that was just around 10 percent of the total number of viewers, which surged exponentially over the weeks: a textbook example of word of mouth making a movie's success.

By contrast, "Bewitching Attraction" released on March 16 last year and starring Ji Jin-hee and Moon So-ri drew a total of 588,467 viewers, but 60 percent or 280,141 of them saw it on the first weekend. Most people who went to see the movie were misled by a provocative poster that has been slammed as close to false advertising. Some 2,438 Netizens gave the movie a dismal average rating of 3.05, placing it 673rd out of 676. Before release, the average rating had been 6.54.

Systematic Approaches Are Necessary to Tap Foreign Market

It has been an ordinary scene in recent years for a Korean movie star to be surrounded by thousands of international fans at an airport or a fan meeting in Asia.

With their popularity growing overseas, domestic films have gradually made their way to international markets. But despite the rush, the overall performance of domestic movies in overseas markets has been disappointing, with only a few exceptions.

Experts point out that film stars?popularity does not necessarily lead to the overseas box office success of their films.

They also say the local film industry should diversify marketing strategies to take more a systematic approach to target markets.

Reliance on Japanese Market

According to a report from the Korean Film Council (KOFIC), the first half of 2006 has seen a sharp decrease in the international sales of Korean films.

The 3rd LA Korean International Film Festival will open Sept. 29 (local time) at West Hollywood in Los Angeles for a seven-day run.

The festival will feature films in various genres by South Korean and Korean-American filmmakers, including short films, documentaries and anime films. The film "Running Wild" by director Kim Seong-soo has been chosen for the opening ceremony of this year's festival. After the film's screening, Kim will hold a question-and-answer session with viewers.

Other films that have been invited include Park Chan-wook's "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance", Kim Dae-woo's "Forbidden QUestt", Lee Yoon-ki's "This Charming Girl" and Lee Hyeon-seung's "Il Mare", which drew the spotlight for a Hollywood remake entitled "The Lake House".

Films by Korean-American directors include "Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles" by Tomy Yoon and Lee Dong-wook, "The Present" by Kim hyung-hyup, and "Asian Stories" by Chris Chin.

The Los Angeles Korean International Film Festival kicks off its one-week run Friday at the Laemmle Sunset 5 Theater in West Hollywood, featuring an array of contemporary Korean and Korean-American films.

The third annual festival starts with an opening night presentation of director Kim Seong-soo's action drama "Running Wild", starring Kwon Sang-woo and Yu Ji-tae ("Old Boy"). Kim also makes a special appearance for a post-screening question-and-answer session with Korean film buffs.

The filmfest, the largest event dedicated to Korean and Korean-American cinema in North America, features several high-profile Korean movies, including Park Chan-wook's "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" and Lee Yoon-ki's award-winning film "This Charming Girl".

Kwon Sang-woo is a heartthrob movie star in Korea, but that's not enough ― his sights are set on Japan and the rest of Asia.
Mr. Kwon was recently voted one of the most popular world celebrity ― including entertainers, politicians, athletes and writers ― by Japanese women between the ages of 18 and 25 in a poll by the Japanese broadcaster NTV's variety show "Geikoi Real". His name was also included in the list of 100 top celebrities as voted for by those over the age of 50. He and BoA were the only two Korean stars to appear on both lists.
