[MOVIE REVIEW] 'My Mighty Princess' overcomes 2-year delay

"My Mighty Princess", a new romantic comedy directed by Kwak Jae-yong, is finally hitting theaters this month after a delay of more than two years, raising hopes among fans who still remember the filmmaker's hit, "My Sassy Girl".

The delay illustrates the deepening problems plaguing Korean cinema, when even work by a widely recognized filmmaker such as Kwak has to overcome a slew of hurdles.

Director Kwak, however, seemed relieved about the prospect at a press conference held in Apgujeong-dong on Tuesday.

"All the cast members signed on to the project because they counted on me, but they have been deceived. When I showed my screenplay to them, I told them all the wire action scenes would be done by doubles or stunts, but in fact the actors had to do all the wire actions themselves", Kwak joked.

The Railroad Wins Two Awards at Torino Fest

KIM Kang-woo received the Best Actor Award at the 25th Torino Film Festival for his acting in "The Railroad". Director PARK Heung-shik's film also won the Fipresci Award.

The Railroad premiered successfully in 2006 at the Pusan International Film Festival in the New Current section and enjoyed a limited release in Korean cinemas around May 2007. "The Railroad" is PARK's second feature film and was supported by the 2005 KOFIC Production Support for Low-budget Films.

KIM plays a man whose path crosses a woman portrayed by SON Tae-yeong. Both happened to be on the same train and end up together at the last stop before the North-South Korean border.

KIM is quickly rising to stardom this year because of the box office hit "Le Grand Chef" and is in the spotlight again because of the upcoming film "Rainbow Eyes". SON featured in the assembly cast of "Sad Movie" and numerous television dramas.

Pusan Selection The Railroad's Domestic Release

"The Railroad" (2006) is scheduled for a mid-May release in Korean cinemas. "The Railroad" (Gyeongui Seon) premiered at last year's 11th Pusan International Film Festival and received favorable criticism from critics and audiences. The film participated in the New Current section; together with "Driving with My Wife's Lover" which will open in domestic cinemas later this month.

Director PARK Heung-shik's melodrama features two damaged souls who both end up stranded at the last train stop before the DMZ on a night of heavy snow. The man and the woman find comfort in each other's presence while they are forced to pass time together.

The Railroad is PARK Heung-shik's second feature film and it was part of the 2005 KOFIC Production Support for Low-budget Films program. The male lead is played by KIM Kang-woo ("Silmido") and Son Tae-yeong ("Sad Movie") portrays the female protagonist.

Kim Hye-soo's sex appeal beams in comedy film

Strangely, Kim Hye-soo's beautiful face and curvaceous figure have not delivered box-office success for the actress. Her bold - and revealing - role in "Hypnotized" did not impress moviegoers in 2004. Nor did a tour de force performance in 2005's horror flick "The Red Shoes".

However, a much-awaited turning point came in 2006 when Kim played a voluptuous character in director Choi Dong-hoon's "Tazza: The High Rollers" ("The War of Flower"), a highly successful gambling flick. Both critics and mainstream viewers praised Kim's dauntless yet sensual portrayal of a gambling hostess, and her silver screen value soared.

As if her sexy image-making on the silver screen was not enough, Kim is doing it all again with a similarly sensuous role in "A Day for an Affair", a black comedy depicting two homemakers embroiled in extramarital affairs. Jang Moon-il, who made the lighthearted comedy "The Happy Funeral Director" in 2000, directs the film.

"I like humanity movies like 'Peppermint Candy' or 'Green Fish' more than fantasy. Yet, I thought acting only in such films is not right", said Korean actor Jeong Woo-seong.

"I feel overburdened when people say I look like a machine or I am inhumane. Actually, I am extravagant. I think the woman in the Cyon commercial or the heroin Sohwa in movie Joongchun is who I am: naïve and innocent", said Korean actress Kim Tae-hee.

What kind of fantasy would they have toward each other not as a colleague but as a man and a woman? Kim waved her hand for objection.

Kim said "I thought 'he is very handsome but he is still a human being'. We stayed at the same hotel in China, ate together, and looked at each other in untidy shape in the morning. I think he is very gentle. He gave me a piece of advice saying 'do not calculate when acting'".
